Why should I learn a language?
  • 94 of the Worlds population do not speak
    English as a first language, 75 do not speak
    English at all.
  • On average people who use languages at work earn
    between 8 20 more than those who dont.
  • Learning a language helps you to travel more
    widely and improves your understanding of
    different cultures.

  • Here are some examples of jobs which require or
    prefer people who speak another language.
  • Accountancy
  • Aviation
  • Computer games design
  • Engineering
  • Marketing
  • The current most in demand languages in business
    in the UK are French, German and Spanish.

What are the aims of the MFL GCSE course?
  • To develop an understanding of speaking and
    writing in the foreign language
  • To communicate effectively in the foreign
    language
  • Develop knowledge of the grammar of the foreign
    language
  • Learn about other countries and cultures

How does a GCSE in Languages work
  • The GCSE is made up of 4 themes
  • Theme 1 My world, (Year 10)
  • Theme 2 Holiday time and travel,
  • (Year 10)
  • Theme 3 Work lifestyle,
  • (Year 11)
  • Theme 4 The young person in society,
  • (Year 11)

Assessment in GCSE Languages
  • At Southborough High we follow the linear
    specification for languages (the exam is at the
    end of the course in Year 11)
  • There are 3 exams
  • Listening 25
  • Reading 25
  • Speaking 25
  • There is also coursework 25

How much coursework is there?
  • Coursework is worth 25
  • of your final grade.
  • You will have to hand in
  • your 3 best pieces of work
  • during the course taken from 3 separate
  • themes.
  • Foundation pieces should be 250-300 words, Higher
    pieces 400-500.
  • At least one of the coursework pieces must be
    completed under controlled (exam) conditions.

How will I get the grade that I want?
  • During the course there will be a strong focus on
    practising the key skills of listening, speaking,
    reading and writing.
  • Acquisition of vocabulary will also be emphasised
    through games, reading, vocabulary tests.
  • Understanding of grammar through games, ICT,
    worksheets.

  • Theme 3 is studied during the autumn term of Year
    11.
  • The following topics are covered.
  • Home life
  • Healthy living
  • Part time jobs and work experience
  • Leisure
  • Shopping

  • The topics covered in Theme 4 are personalities
    and relationships,
  • The environment,
  • Education,
  • Future plans,
  • Social issues e.g. drugs, bullying etc.
