Title: Information Technology and Goldmine

1
Information Technology and Goldmine
2
How did students register for classes in the past?
  • In the past, students had to register for classes
    in person.
  • Certain buildings were used for registration, and
each classroom represented certain courses. The
Don Haskins Center was also used for
registration. Sections were set up around the
    halls.

3
How did students register for classes in the past?
  • Basically, students had to visit a variety of
sections throughout the building to register for
    their courses.
  • Long lines were always expected during
registration. Once in line, students hoped that
the courses they wanted wouldnt be full by the
    time it was their turn.

4
How did students register for classes in the past?
  • Confused students often stood in long lines they
werent supposed to be in, but did not know until
it was their turn in line.
  • This process was extremely frustrating for many
    students.

5
What type of technology was used to store
registrartion information?
  • In the past, UTEP used magnetic tapes to store
student information such as registration status,
    financial records, grades, student background
    information, etc.

6
How did the registration process evolve as
technology advanced?
  • Online registration became available through the
use of a mainframe called ISIS3. This online
registration process allowed students to register
using a touchtone telephone. This process, which
is known as Touch Tone Registration, is still
    used today.

7
How did the registration process evolve as
technology advanced?
  • Touch Tone Registration greatly improved the
registration process. Students were able to
register at campus or at home through a
telephone. Even though this registration process
was online, registration was not done through the
    web

8
How has technology changed the registration
process today?
  • In the spring of 99, the IT department developed
a system called goldmine. Goldmine allows
students to register online through the web.
They automatically know which courses are
available, at what time and day, and which
    professors are teaching the courses.

9
How has technology changed the registration
process today?
  • In addition to registering, students become aware
of any fees they might owe just by logging into
goldmine and clicking a link called view holds.
They can also view their grades and print out an
    unofficial transcript.
  • Professors are able to enter students grades and
    process them through goldmine.

10
Is updating goldmine a difficult process?
  • Updating goldmine is fairly easy. IT
    professionals update goldmine by modifying
specific forms. For example, to add new
students, an IT employee types information into
forms provided by goldmine. If a certain
individual needs to be located, queries are
written in SQL and PSQL to search the database.

11
What future predictions can be made about
goldmine and the way students register for
classes?
  • Today, students registration is an easy task
compared to a few years ago. In the future,
students will continue to register through touch
tone registration and goldmine. Goldmine will
continue to exist for many years, with perhaps a
few changes. One change might be converting
pipeline and goldmine into one system, but thats
    another story
