8What is the North American Title Count?
- Longitudinal and comparative collections resource
(similar to now defunct AMIGOS product) - Data collected, through 2001, every four years,
by subcommittee of ALCTS (Association for Library
Collections and Technical Services), recently
taken over by Library Dynamics due to lack of
funding - Voluntary participation
9What is the North American Title Count
(continued)?
- Divides up holdings by LC Classification,
regardless of format - Electronic items with LC classifications are
included - Conversions made for items catalogued by Dewey
- Numerous exceptions may be present
- Unlike ARL, NATC counts titles not volumes
- Single title of journal rather than whole run of
journal counted - Unfortunately, different institutions appear each
year, rendering comparisons difficult

15How to calculate cost?
- Several methods employed, depending on the
liaison - Average price of title in discipline (e.g.
Yankee) X smallest institutional gap - Average price of title in discipline (e.g.
Yankee) X mean difference with other institutions
16- Based on information from annual Departmental
Liaison Plan - note not all reports were done this way
- Consulted departments website
- Some of this information was outdated!
- Spoke with Chair of Math/CS Department made
needed corrections - Included info. about Approval Plan
- My structure differed a little from Template
17- I. Program Overview
- Established department, of moderate size
- 27 regular 5 visiting faculty 34 Ph.D.
students 14 M.S. students 125 undergraduate
majors - Degrees offered B.A., B.S., M.S., Ph.D.
- Ph.D. in Math only at this time
- Ph.D. in Comp Sci has been proposed
- Interdisciplinary programs
- B.A. Math/Economics
- B.A./M.S.P.H. (5-yr. program w/Public Health)
- Ph.D. in Physics/M.S. in Computational Science
18- II. Description of Material Collected
- LC classes mostly QA
- Computer Science QA75.5 - QA76.95with some TKs
and TJs - Math rest of the QAs with some Ts, TAs, Qs
- Chronology Dates mostly new works are
purchased, but gaps should be filled in math
doesnt go bad! - Mostly English-language works are collected some
foreign language (chiefly German, French,
Russian) - Primarily from U.S. Great Britain
- Lots of monographs, serials, e-journals
- Not so many e-books, microforms, multimedia
- No Undergraduate Textbooks
19- III. NATC Comparison
- Emory has smallest Math/CS collection overall,
with 24,019 vols. - Vanderbilt is next-smallest, with 25,507
(-1,488) - Average of the five others (i.e. non-Emory) is
34,105 (-10,086) - Univ. of North Carolina is largest, with
41,312 (-17,293)
20- III. NATC Comparison (2)
- Emory is the 2nd-smallest school in the peer
group - Smallest library in peer group (1,272,577 total
in 2001 NATC) - Emory had 119.74 volumes per student, 4th of 6
- Chicago had 229.02 (most) NYU had 41.74
- Compares favorably to some peers in some LC
ranges - Surpasses some institutions in 2 ranges
- On the other hand, were never above the mean in
any range - Came in last in 5 of 7 ranges
- However, in 2 of these, the margin was very
close - Average price for math books in FY-2004 82.30
- Cost for Emory to catch up to Vanderbilt
122,462.40 - Cost 830,077.80 for group average
1,423,213.90 for UNC
21IV. Rankings Academic Programs/Library
Desirable peers for Math/CS, but did not
participate in 2001 NATC Rankings are taken from
U.S. News World Report, 2004 ed.
22Progress to date
- Completed 19 areas
- Working on 10 1 areas
