needed to reinforce concepts learned in lecture
and seminar. Assignments will be counted towards
your participation grade and used in class to
    facilitate discussions.
  • There will also be a presentation due in week 8.

9
Concert Reports
  • An important requirement for Music 190 is
attendance at three college-level or professional
live concerts of classical music (one may be a
    jazz concert).
  • Each student must attend the first concert on
Sept. 22nd at 800PM in the Recital Hall on
    campus.

10
Concert Reports
  • The other two concerts may be selected from a
list of on-campus events that will be provided in
class or the student may choose off-campus
concerts with the permission of the seminar
    instructor.

the venue like who was there and finally, any

    repertoire.

Concert Reports
  • A discussion of the styles represented and the
    significance of each historical information
    regarding appropriate stylistic influences as
identified in the text and any other reading you
wish to include (must be footnoted) a
description of the elements of music as they
relate to several of the pieces performedand any
speculation you may add concerning your own view
of the performances stylistic origins, based on
    those elements.

knowledge of the course objectives and your own
    personal tastes

14
Concert Reports

attached rubric for the above content and writing
skills and are worth a total of 60 points each.
Late reports will normally be reduced in score by
one point for each day they are late unless the
student has an excuse that corresponds to the
Universitys attendance norms as stated in the
CSULB Catalog (see pp. 74and 75)

meetings and participate actively in discussions.

teacher immediately after and absence so that an
excuse may be presented and missed information

attending class each day (or for an excused
absence) and another for participating actively
in the discussion on a given day.

genre, and influences that lead to the work. In
addition, the student will attempt to identify
all seven of the elements of music present in the
    piece.

18
Seminar Project
  • The student will offer an oral presentation of
the above information and then conclude with a
personal, subjective analysis of the music as a
work of art. Why do you like it? What is the
significance of this music to you?
