3- Pictures
- Have you ever seen a picture that looks
like a puzzle? If so, what you saw may have been
a mosaic (mo-ZAY-ick). Mosaics are pictures made
from small pieces of colored tiles, shells,
glass, jewels, or precious metals. These
colorful pieces are placed into wet cement. When
the cement dries and hardens, the pieces cannot
fall out. - People started making mosaics at least
5,000 years ago. The earliest mosaics were
patterns made with a few different colors.
Later, people learned how to make
tiles in hundreds of colors. Soon, mosaic
artists began to make pictures that looked like
real people and objects. Long ago, before people
knew how to read, they learned stories about the
past by looking at mosaic pictures. Mosaics
are common in many old churches and public
buildings. They cover the walls, ceilings, and
floors. But, mosaics arent just a thing of the
past. Some artists today still make mosaics.

12- Shadow Hours (By Mickey Toom)
- Sometimes at night, when all is still,
- Dark Shadows leap my windowsill.
- They dance like goblins all along
- The dresser, where they dont belong.
- Sometimes I throw a book to scare
- Them back into the midnight air-
- But usually I hide my head
- Beneath the pillows on my bed.
- I crack my door to let in light
- And check the closet every night,
- Then look beneath my bed to see
- If something there could jump at me.
-
- Ive never found a monster, just
- Some Tinkertoys and blocks and dust.
- The shadows that I see by night
- Are gone with the mornings yellow light.
- My mother and my father say
- There are no monsters-night or day
- They tell me that I shouldnt worry
- But I say, Better Safe Than Sorry!
