S. E. Hintons The Outsiders is a novel
about two gangs, the Socs and the Greasers.
The Socs is a gang that drives nice cars, and
they live in nice homes. Their parents are
there when they need them. On the other hand,
the Greasers is not a bad group. Members of the
Greasers just do not have parents or are like
Johnny whose parents dont care about him or
like him. Johnny feels like dying. Ponyboy, a
Greaser, just lives in a house all alone with
his three brothers or should I say men?
44
These two gangs are alike in many ways.
The only thing that is different is parents. The
Greasers parents died or in Johnnys case the
parents dont care about them, but they really
are the same. Ponyboy says that Cherry, a Socs,
looked him straight in the eye and said, Things
are rough all over. Socs are not better then
the Greasers according to Cherry. The Socs just
have parents, and the Greasers dont, and all
kids want their family together, to take care of
them.
