HD Monitors in Video Conferencing

HD Monitors
  • In order to view video conferencing in HD, users
must connect their HD video solution to an HD
    monitor
  • Most users know and are aware of this
  • When a system is being set up and connected to a
monitor, users should look at on-screen
statistics to ensure they are properly
    configuring the solution
  • The statistics from the HD video system should
accurately reflect what is being sent to the
    monitor

3
TANDBERG MXP and Edge send VGA not HD
  • When asked, TANDBERG claims that most users do
not have HD monitors and that VGA is preferable
  • Polycom has not found this to be the case
  • Regardless, TANDBERG should display accurate call
statistics of what is actually being sent to the
    monitor
  • Currently they do not they default and
    auto-configure to VGA (1024 x 768)
  • There is no option in the user interface to
    choose 720p
  • There are no notices in release notes or
marketing collateral to warn users of this

4
API / Telnet Command Needed
  • TANDBERG F5.3 and F6.0 video output defaults to
VGA and can not be configured to output 1280x720
resolution without the use of a special API /
    telnet command
  • Users should not have to telnet into video
system to display HD on their HD monitors

Statistics from HD monitor show VGA
Statistics on TANDBERG GUI claim 720p

Summary
  • Why would TANDBERG do this? Maybe.
  • Because 1024 x 768 is 14.7 fewer pixels than
1280 x 720 and therefore easier to encode and
    decode
  • Because at 1280 x 720 their image is blurry
  • To allow them to get closer to 30fps
  • Regardless, TANDBERG users are not getting what
they are paying for true 30fps HD
  • Polycom HDX 9000 delivers true HD directly out
of the box and can connect easily to any HD
    monitor
  • If a user does prefer VGA, they can easily select
that in the HDX user interface or web UI
