  • This presentation is designed to show you step by
    step instruction on how to use StarNotes for
    medical documentation.
  • We at System Support Services are the liaisons
    between the Informatics team and the medical
    professionals who use the systems.

What is StarNotes?
  • StarNotes is a medical documentation tool within
    StarPanel that uses the following techniques
  • Point and Click
  • Typing

Advantages to using StarNotes
  • Less expensive than dictation.
  • Your note is immediately available to other
    providers.
  • You can customized your templates.
  • Access available 24/7 through Vanderbilt or at
    home by using a Secure-ID Token.
  • Contact your department manager to find out more
    about Secure-ID Tokens.

How to Access StarNotes
  • There are several ways to access StarNotes
  • Pull a patients chart and click on StarNotes in
    the yellow demographic frame.
  • Click on Outpatient Visit then StarNotes for the
    selected patient.
  • Click on StarNotes in the black menu bar and make
    your patient selection based on date of service.

StarNotes VocabularyCategories/Templates/Prefere

  • Categories are broad groupings for templates such
    as Burn Center Notes.
  • Templates are the individual types of notes such
    as Burn Center Clinic Visit.
  • Create a preference list by clicking on the word
    Add shown beside the template you would like to
    add.

When you click on ADD beside a template, the
template is added to your User preference list
If there isnt a template that fits your clinics
needs then the staff in System Support Services
can assist and train you to build your own or we
can build templates to your specifications.

Most common steps to access StarNotes
  • Step One
  • Click Outpatient Visits in the black menu bar.
  • Step Two
  • Under the Actions column click on StarNotes for
    selected patient.

  • Click on the category name such as Burn Center
  • Click on the template name such as Burn Center
    Clinic Visit.
  • If the date of service is not accurate, please
    click Date of Service to make the correction.

Navigation
  • Name of the document appears at the top along
    with the MR and Patient Name.
  • You may click on the MR at the top of the note
    to view this patients chart.

  • The selected template will appear under the
    StarNotes tab.
  • This feature allows you to switch back and forth
    between Pt. Chart and StarNotes.

Navigating through the document
  • All the black type is the actual template. You
    may delete any text that is not appropriate for a
    particular note and the changes will not affect
    the original template.
  • You can use the tab key to go to the red dots or
    text. The tab stops allow you to jump quickly to
    the next section of the note.
  • You can auto import labs, text from forms and all
    aspects of the problem list such as medications
    and allergies.

Dynamic Field
  • The dynamic fields give you the ability to add
    text to the note at varying levels of complexity.
  • For example If you click on Post hospitalization
    StarNotes will import the information you see
    here to the left into your note.
  • Important place the curser where you want the
    text to display in the note before you click on
    the dynamic field.

  • The area located to the right of the template is
    called the dynamic field.
  • The middle scroll bar moves you through the
    dynamic fields. 
  • The far right scroll bar moves the entire page.
  • The dynamic field may contain one word or a
    paragraph depending on how the template is
    designed.

Saving the document
  • Notice The closing signature title of the note
    appears at the bottom. Please check for
    accuracy.
  • If your signature title is not correct click
    change title and make the necessary changes and
    click send changes.
  • Click Save as Draft as often as you would like
    to save your work. There is also an auto-save
    feature that saves your note every 90 seconds but
    do not rely on this feature to save your draft.
  • Drafts will appear in your SignDrafts worklist
    for final completion.
  • You are the only one who can see or use your
    drafts.

Saving continued
  • Click Save to StarPanel.
  • This action will immediately save the document in
    the patients chart as a final document.

Printing in StarNotes
  • Click Print at the bottom of the document.
  • Once you click print the document will come up in
    a new window in adobe acrobat. 
  • You will have to click on the Print icon in adobe
    acrobat in order to actually print the document.

SignDrafts InstructionsFirst time users
  • In the black menu bar click on SignDraft
  • Click on choose another
  • Click on add a worklist to my set. You may have
    a worklist already created for you called
    sign_at_your-userid.
  • To find your sign_at_ worklist double-click to
    expand the frame and then click on the S tab and
    find the worklist that contains your user id
    (i.e. sign_at_vjmqkg), a yellow pop up menu will
    appear then click on add to my worklist.
  • Once you have added this worklist to your set, if
    you want this particular worklist to be your
    default then just click on it.
  • This worklist may or may not automatically pull
    in your StarNotes. If it doesnt email
    Linda.McNeil_at_vanderbilt.edu and she will edit the
    sign_at_ worklist so it will show you your StarNotes
    drafts. You will not be allowed to edit this
    sign_at_ worklist since this list is used for
    tracking purposes.
  • If you want to create another worklist to follow
    residents/fellows final notes then you can create
    an additional worklist with their user ids.

Steps to edit a worklist
  • Create a new worklist
  • Name your worklist
  • Type in your user id for StarNotes.
  • Click here if you would like to see only FINAL
    documents in this particular worklist.
  • Once all data is entered, click OK.

  • If you are experiencing problems with an existing
    template or you would like assistance creating
    your own template/s please call 3-help (3-4357)
    and a staff member from System Support Services
    will contact you.
