Circulatory System
  • The circulatory system is our bodys main
transportation and cooling system. It is how
oxygen and nutrients reach our bodys cells, and
    waste materials are carried out.
  • Blood that is moving away from the heart carries
oxygen and nutrients to every part of the body.
Blood making the return trip picks up waste so
that your body can get rid of it.

3
Circulatory System Parts
  • Blood
  • Most of the blood in your body is a colorless
    liquid called plasma.
  • Red blood cells are what make your blood the red
color. As they travel away from the heart red
blood cells deliver oxygen to all parts of the
body. They pick up waste as they travel back to
    the heart.
  • White blood cells work as a defense system for
    your body.
  • Platelets are cells that help your body repair
    itself.

4
Circulatory System Parts
  • Heart
  • Your heart is a muscle about the size of a fist.
  • It contracts and relaxes about 70 times per
minute if you are at rest, if you are exercising
it contracts and relaxes many more times per
minute. This is your heart rate.
  • Your heart pumps blood to your entire body as it
    is contracting.

Circulatory System Parts
  • Blood Vessels
  • Blood vessels are a rubbery pipeline with many
branches that wind throughout your entire body.
  • Arteries are blood vessels that carry blood away
    from your heart.
  • Veins are blood vessels that carry blood toward
    your heart.
  • Capillaries are like the turnaround point for
your blood. Arteries carry the blood to these
smaller branches, capillaries, the blood is then
brought back to the heart through veins.

Circulatory System Path
  • When you inhale, oxygen enters your lungs.
  • Blood is pumped from you heart to your lungs
    where it picks up oxygen.
  • This oxygen filled blood is sent back to the
heart to get pumped to the arteries and through
    capillaries.
  • The blood travels through the entire body
    delivering nutrients.
  • Blood then enters veins to make the return trip
back to the heart to pick up more oxygen. Along
the way it picks up any waste to be removed from
    the body.

Fun Facts
  • Adult bodies contain over 60,000 miles of blood
    vessel.
  • Adult hearts pump almost 4,000 gallons of blood a
    day.
  • A heart beats 30 million times a year.
  • Adults have an average of 15 pints of blood in
    their bodies.
  • A three year old has approximately 3 pints of
    blood in their bodies.
