Title: EANES ISD K 12 MATH PROGRAM

1
EANES ISDK 12 MATH PROGRAM
2
Dr. Wellmans Charge
  • Move more students into Algebra in
  • 8th Grade
  • Find other pathways for advancement
  • Determine where compacting is most appropriate

3
Other Factors
  • 4 X 4 at High School
  • EOC Assessments
  • Foundation skills in the early grades are
critical for student success on more complex
understandings and problem solving in the upper
    grades
  • Rigor of Everyday Math

4
Research on Other Districts

6
Other Research
  • National Mathematics Advisory Panel
  • To prepare students for Algebra, the K-8
    curriculum must develop conceptual understanding,
computational fluency, and problem solving skills
  • Critical Foundations of Algebra are
  • Fluency with whole numbers
  • Fluency with fractions
  • Aspects of geometry and measurement
  • Mathematically gifted students with sufficient
motivation appear to be able to learn mathematics
much faster, with no harm to their learning, and
should be allowed to do so.

7
Other Research
  • NCTM (National Council of Teachers of
    Mathematics)
  • It takes time to develop the important
pre-requisite concepts and skills for Algebra
  • The concepts skills development should be a
focus of mathematics instruction from pre-K
    through grade 12
  • All students should have access to algebra and
    support for learning it.
  • Only when students exhibit demonstrable success
with prerequisites skills not at a prescribed
grade level- should they focus explicitly and
extensively on algebra. Exposing students to
such coursework before they are ready often leads
to frustration, failure, and negative attitudes
    toward mathematics and learning.

8
Other Research
  • Dr. David Berg University of California,
    Berkley
  • Students need a solid foundation of the basic
    four operations, fractions, decimals advanced
place value to be successful in Algebra
  • All students can be successful in Algebra with a
    proper K-8 scope sequence
  • The child development growth from 3rd to 4th
grade is large. His recommendation would be to
not accelerate instruction before 4th grade

9
Other Research
  • Dr. Andy Isaacs University of Chicago
  • Students require a thorough understanding of the
    following concepts before taking Algebra
  • numbers and operations
  • fractions and real numbers
  • ratios and solving proportional relationships
  • He recommends that students are kept together and
do not skip a grade level of math before 5th
    grade

10
Purpose of Realigning K 8 Math Program
  • Ensure that elementary students have a deep
understanding of the math concepts and skills
necessary for success in higher level courses
  • Allow more students to advance in math at a more
    appropriate age
  • Prepare students for 4 X 4 requirement and End
    of Course exams at WHS
  • Allow more students to take higher level science
courses that require pre-requisite math courses

Plan
  • What have we done?
  • Research with other districts and experts
  • Developed a plan with principals
  • Conducted a series of presentations and meetings
    to receive feedback from staff
  • All elementary teachers
  • Middle school math teachers
  • Elementary G/T teachers
  • Visited 4 school districts that are compacting
math in middle school, providing extended time in
    math

14
Plan
  • Next Steps
  • Create Visionary Teams on each middle school
campus to analyze the use of time and electives
  • Continue all grade 3,4, and 5 Advanced Math
    classes until phased out
  • Meet with elementary G/T teachers to develop plan
    for exceptionally gifted math students
  • Replace compacting at 2nd grade in 2009-10 with
flexible group practice that allows enrichment
    and extended practice and support

15
Plan
  • Next Steps
  • Communicate new K-8 math plan to elementary
parents through letters and presentations at each
    campus
  • 5th, 6th, and 7th grade math teachers will
compact the math curriculum in 2009-10
  • Implement new compacted 6th grade math in 2010-11
  • Add Instructional Coaches to support the
    realignment of K-8 math
