Toxic Campus Climates
  • Micro-aggressions

Dont join the Latino Student Assoc. Thats
segregation. We have an orientation program for
Black students, when will we have one for
Whites? Why dont we have scholarships for
White students? We already have one Black
person on staff. Why do we need another? If
you want to get tenure you need to publish in
mainstream journals. We cant find any
qualified minorities. Whites are being
subjected to reverse discrimination. Im
against affirmative action because of the
quotas. We already have world history, why do
we need Asian Studies?

Toxic Campus Climates
  • Diversity Myths

Affirmative Action hurts minorities Participatin
g in ethnic student groups promotes
segregation Affirmative action discriminates
against Whites Gays and lesbians are invisible
and, therefore ethnic/racial groups have it
worse. All Whites are racist and dont care
about diversity The only reason Whites have
succeeded is because of White privilege Teaching
people about diversity only leads to conflict and
disunity Asians are the model minority We cant
find any qualified people of color

Toxic Campus Climates
  • Diversity Norms

If you are Latino, take care of other Latinos.
Dont support African Americans If you are gay
or lesbian, dont flaunt it and we will be ok
with it Dont bring up the concept of
spirituality because you will be accused of
promoting religion Dont invite Whites to
participate in the multicultural agenda or
initiatives. To educate Whites about diversity,
they need to be treated as harshly as people of
color have been treated. If you are a faculty
member or administrator, dont speak out on
issues of diversity. Let students speak out. If
you are a heterosexual, dont support the gays or
lesbians. You will be accused of being one. If
you are a faculty member, dont invite staff to
join your organization. They have totally
separate issues.
