4JET
5JET preparing ITER operation
Size gt Plasma parameters closest to ITER
4m
6JET a powerful asset to prepare ITER operation
- plasma parameters closest to those of ITER (R
3m Ip up to 4 4.5 MA alpha particles
confined ITER plasma shape) - the only Tokamak that handles Tritium
- tests of several ITER-relevant technologies e.g.
unique remote handling capability, ITER-like
ICRH-antenna, burning plasma diagnostics - unique capability to use the same plasma facing
materials as foreseen for ITER (beryllium) gt
ITER-like wall project
7- JET
- Routine performance of in-vessel remote handling
tasks
8Modified JET Divertor (MkII-HD) allowing
operation with ITER-shape plasmas since end 2005
Wide-angle IR view
9Improved JET diagnostics allowing physics studies
on key ITER issues
Example New divertor bolometer used for ELM
studies
During ELM
Between ELMs
10 14 MeV Neutron tomography Studies of
tritium transport Excellent capability to
predict T transport confirmed by 14 MeV D-T
neutrons tomography
11ITER-like ICRH antenna
- Antenna assembly ongoing
- Installation during Winter/Spring 07 shutdown
- Aim at demonstration of ITER ICRH antenna concept
- ELM resilience
- High power density
12JET preparing ITER operation
-
- Materials of ITER plasma facing components will
be installed in 2008-2009 - CFC tiles to be replaced by Be tiles and W
tiles W-coated tiles - A key step in support for ITER
- Plasma scenarios fully compatible with Be W
- Mixed materials issues
- Control of power transients
- Reduced T retention
13JET a facility collectively used in preparation
of ITER
Participation of European Physicists in JET 2006
Experimental Campaigns
- About 300 different European physicists and
collaborators from USA, Japan, Russian
Federation, China conduct experiments on JET - Brazilian participation through Portugal
14Technology (ITER-DEMO)
15EFDA Technology Activities
- Preparing for the construction of ITER
- Preparing in the longer term for DEMO
- Activities include
- research and development work
- design tasks
- manufacturing and testing of components
- EFDA coordinates the technology activities in the
Associations and European industry

17ITER Lines of Activities (1)
Technology Workprogramme 2006 - 2007
Activities focused on the design and RD towards
the ITER procurement, defined in close
collaboration with the ITER International Team
(IT)
- Assisting the IT in the preparation of the most
urgently needed technical specifications
(magnets, vacuum vessel, buildings and site
preparation). - Investigation on the manufacturing of the most
critical components (divertor, vacuum vessel,
shield modules). - Preparation of European test facilities (Dipole,
HELOKA, DTP-2, ECRH Test Facility, HeFUS3)
18Technology Workprogramme 2006 - 2007
ITER Lines of Activities (2)
- Focused effort in areas where design and RD are
still needed Machine Assembly, Remote Handling,
ITER Test Blanket Modules, Diagnostics, Heating
and Current Drive. - Assisting the IT in the preparation of safety and
licensing documentation for ITER and related
safety studies. - Preparing EU laboratories European Industries
for ITER construction.

20ITER Vessel / In-Vessel
Full-Scale Vertical Target Prototype
Thermal fatigue testing of the full-scale
divertor vertical target prototype manufactured
by HIP was previously reported with 1000 cycles
at 20 MW/m2 plus additional 1000 cycles at 23
MW/m2 on CFC. The testing has now been
completed also on the W armoured part where 1000
cycles at 20 MW/m2 have been achieved.
Cu-cast W-lamellae monoblocks
21ITER Vessel / In-Vessel
VV Individual Parts 3-D formed plates
2 x 3 metre, curved parts of the walls of the VV
need to be 3-D formed. A study being carried out
to determine press shape and forces required.
Trial forming to validate computer model
22ITER Vessel / In-Vessel
RH Design Activities
