Meeting of ISO/TC84/WG3/T22 BuildingConstruction
Seoul, November 2-8, 2002 German National
Activity Report
  • Contents
  • Market situation of AEC CAD-software
  • AEC Research Program of the German Ministry for
    Education and Research
  • Activities related to VDA
  • Activities related to governmental authorities
  • German Project ODABAU
  • EC Project FunSTEP DIS
  • EC project PRODAEC

2
Market situation of AEC CAD-software
  • Little changes since Stockholm meeting
  • Continued severe recession of construction
industry for several years in a sequence no
    prospects for recovery
  • Only construction companies mainly working abroad
or providing a full service finance, design,
    construct and operate are successful
  • Hard time for system vendors for the AEC
    industry, especially CAD-system vendors
  • Dramatic losses of value at the stock exchange
market (up to more than 95)
  • Continue to produce losses
  • Concentration on core business, for example CAD
    or building specification systems
  • Increased tendency to cooperate
  • Tendency to switch from national CAD systems to
    international CAD systems

3
AEC Program of the German Ministry for Education
and Research (1/2)
  • 5 Years program with an overall volume of approx
    45 million US
  • Covers all kinds of AEC research, not only IT in
    AEC
  • Two STEP related projects
  • Usually 50 funding
  • Reduction in 2002 and following years due to
    budget problems of German Government

4
AEC Program of the German Ministry for Education
and Research (2/2)
  • STEP related Project
  • ODABAU Integrated design and construction using
project web servers. Basically Web server for any
kind of construction documents, CAD files will be
    stored in STEP-CDS format
  • Budget 2 Million US,
  • Original Duration January 2001 December 2002,
was extended for 9 months to September 2003
  • Web based document and drawing management has
    been set up
  • New attempt to establish easy to use layering
guidelines with the goal to share layer and to
    avoid to redraw existing information
  • Training of small design offices has been done
  • Intensive testing by construction company Ed.
    Zueblin and design offices
  • Start of pilot project was delayed
  • Parallel design (conventional and web) based to
evaluate benefits of web based project management
  • Final Goal Handbook for Web based project
    management including document management

5
STEP-CDS Acceptance and projects
  • Acceptance
  • Licenses now in all major car companies
  • Two new CAD systems joining the initiative
  • Four states of Germany adopting STEP-CDS
  • Projects VDA related projects
  • Extension of the DaimlerChrysler Factory in
    Tuscaloosa USA
  • New BMW factory in Leipzig
  • As built documentation of DaimlerChrysler Plant
    50 in Sindelfingen
  • DaimlerChrysler factory Marienfelde, Berlin
  • Refurbishment of Hall 4 and new communication
centre of the AUDI factory in Ingolstadt
  • Extension of the University of Hannover
  • Skypeer tower (DEKA real estate, 60 Storeys, 450
    million investment) in Frankfurt
  • STEP-CDS implementations enable more design
offices to participate in design projects with
their system. They are no longer forced to use
    the System of their client.

6
Development activities related to VDA
  • General properties mechanism proposal discussed
    with Max Ungerer
  • Draft proposal has already been incorporated into
    STEP-CDS, implementation is in place
  • Review and Discussion of mechanisms to
    incorporate raster images (together with
    Seong-Sig Kim and Max Ungerer)
  • Survey on 3D-CAD data exchange requirements
    (digital factory paradigm)
  • Testing of existing AP214 implementations
  • Actual 3D-CAD Factory environment (Huge amount of
    data, mixed results)
  • Further testing of 18 small 3D Test cases, of
    increasing complexity
  • Start of the development of a STEP based facility
    management system
  • First goal space management

Some 3D test examples
10
AP225 based data exchange project (1/2)
  • Basis STEP AP225 implementations in practical
usage such as the exchange of 55 facilities of
the city of Hamburg (3D building models)
    continues
  • Change of CAD system from RIBCON to ALLPLAN
  • Most demanding type of data exchange since client
wants to use the data as if they were created in
    the new system
  • Finally started in January 2002
  • Mismatch between sending and receiving system
  • Modern buildings almost no problems
  • Client requires specific wall types in ALLPLAN,
does not accept so called polygon walls
  • New capability was incorporated in ALLPLAN
  • Still some afterwork is required if old buildings
(beginning of 20th century) with sculptured walls
    will be exchanged or
  • Autonmatically surveyed walls were point in
spaces were surveyed and the walls, openings etc.
    generated by software.

EC Project FunSTEP DIS
  • Uses the Application Module approach
  • Most of them in an advanced stage of development
and extracted from AP214 (Automotive AP)
  • Includes 5 modules to represent buildings,
    extracted from AP225
  • Building components
  • Building items
  • Building structure
  • Location in building
  • Building shape
  • In total approx. 20 building related entities
  • Use of existing modules to represent geometry,
    non geometric attributes, classification etc.
  • Can be used by other APs

13
EC Project Prodaec (1/2)
  • Topic Thematic Network
  • Work packages
  • WP1 Management
  • WP2 National Information Points
  • WP3 Industrial Needs
  • WP4 Standards
  • WP5 Electronic Business
  • Started February 2002
  • Kick off meeting 18./19. February 2002
  • First review meeting September 9th 2002,
    evaluation of current status

14
EC Project Prodaec (2/2)
  • Evaluation of Harmonization
  • IFC2X EXPRESS-G as colored wall paper (DWG),
indicating the subset to be established as ISO
PAS and entities where similar SC4 entities
    exist, mostly from STEP (WH)
  • EXCEL Spreadsheet with all IFC2x entities as a
basis for the assessment of harmonization issues
    (WH)
  • Assessment of IFC2X platform geometry differences
with STEP Part 42 and proposals for harmonization
    (WH)
  • White paper of harmonization of IFC geometry
where there is not direct equivalent in STEP part
    42, done by (RG)
  • Comments to the Assessment (WH)

15
