Outline of Slides
  • Slide 1 CarSim Setup
  • Shows screenshots of the custom road profile
    being created in CarSim as well as the built-in
    surface animator
  • Slide 2 Determining the Simulation Parameters
  • Based upon available probability data, the chart
    on this slide shows the probability of the chosen
    vehicle classes, speeds, and encroachment angles
    to be simulated
  • Slide 3 Defining Vehicle Classes
  • Shows a table of vehicle parameters used to
    define each vehicle class. These parameters
    (along with an in depth survey of vehicles on the
    market) were used to calculate an average bumper
    height with respect to vehicle CG for each
    vehicle class
  • Slide 4 Simulation Screenshots
  • Shows screenshots from the surface animator of a
    simulation on a 6H1V median slope. The driver
    input shown here was with light braking (5 MPa of
    brake pressure) and steering the vehicle back
    into the original travel lane

  • Slide 5 Simulation Results
  • Shows various plots of the output from the
    simulation run shown in Slide 4. The final plot
    shows black rectangles (which represent the
    vehicles front bumper) as the vehicle starts in
    the travel lane, crashes down the median and
    eventually ends up back in the original travel
    lane
  • Slide 6 Simulation Results
  • Shows the results of all small SUV simulations on
    a 6H1V median. The bumper height was recorded as
    a function of lateral offset from the original
    travel lanes shoulder.
  • Attached Movies
  • Have also attached two movies. One animation was
    taken directly from CarSim to see the test shown
    in Slides 4 and 5. The other movie shows the
    bumper trace in action as the vehicle crashes
    down the median. It is overlayed on top of the
    plot in Slide 5.

Determining Simulation Parameters
  • As the end results of this study are going to be
    weighted based upon their probability of actually
    occurring, the vehicle classes, speeds and
    encroachment angles simulated were chosen based
    upon available probability data from the RSAP
    Engineers Manual and the 2001 National Household
    Travel Survey.

  • The bumper height was recorded as a function of
    lateral distance from the original travel lane
    shoulder. This was done to represent the height
    at which the bumper would hit a hypothetical
    barrier, if the barrier was placed at this
    lateral offset
  • Results shown for all simulated speeds and
    encroachment angles for a small SUV on a 6H1V
    median slope
