2- A hundred years ago it was calculated that
doubling the carbon dioxide (CO2) levels from the
industrial revolution would raise the Earths
temperature by 4 - 6 ºC. - Today these figures are becoming startlingly
true. The earth is now dangerously overheating
because of our greenhouse gas emissions trapping
the suns heat within our atmosphere. - The 1990s were the warmest decade in the past
1,000 years and we have had the nine warmest
years on record in the last decade. -
- And the heating is accelerating
3Transport and climate change
- A quarter of greenhouse gases come from cars and
public transport. These emissions are expected to
rise by 30 by 2010. - Did you know? Up to 24,000 people die prematurely
in the UK every year as result of poor air
quality. - 78 of people in Wales travel to work by car.
- Without the awareness, support and action of
millions of UK citizens, the country will not
deliver its ambitious climate change goals.
4Carbon dioxide emissions
- Over 80 of journeys to work are less than two
miles. - Each person in the UK needs to reduce their TOTAL
CO2 emissions (including heating electricity)
to less than 3000 kg/CO2/year - Travelling 10,000 miles per year represents
- 1,200 litres of petrol 1080 pa
- 3,542 kg CO2 pa

times a week (one way over 40 weeks) 400 - Cost of a student bus card 30
- Travelling just two miles by car every day (over

- Cost of insurance, tax, MOT and petrol
approximately 20p / mile.
7If you do drive simple tips for your car
- Pollution every kilometre in your car counts
- Reduce fuel consumption by putting you in the
driving seat, how? - Avoid unnecessary car journeys
- Avoid hard acceleration or breaking
- Think about buying a smaller car, it will be more
fuel-efficient, cause less pollution and will
save you money on petrol and tax. - Convert your existing car to run on
- cleaner fuel - There are over 1,300
- refuelling stations across the UK
- selling cleaner fuels, LPG, Biodiesel.
