Title: How is Leith Hill currently managing its footpaths

1
How is Leith Hill currently managing its
footpaths?
Using your notes from the warden and my notes,
fill in this table in as much detail as possible.
Problems on Leith Hill
Current solutions

Dont forget you could also include annotated
photos and field sketches in your table to
illustrate the solutions.
2
Broken or dangerous trees are lopped but left as
habitats
How does another National Trust site - Box Hill
manage its footpaths?
Chalk covered footpath - natural on Box Hill but
could be used on Leith Hill
Car park
Re-surfaced path to allow disabled access to
viewpoint - cost 32,000.
Visitors centre, toilets, gift shop and servery
Grassland and scrubland managed with animals
Concrete mixed with gravel is used to surface
paths around visitors centre.
Viewpoint
Dont forget to include annotated photos and
sketches again.
Surface of this footpath has been covered with
limestone scalpings
Geotextile covering of path - no longer used
You could also include a bar graph showing the
scores you allocated to each management technique.
3
Sustainabilitymanaging an area for future
generations both socially, economically and
environmentally. Remember the three legged
stool (you could put the diagram in your
coursework).
My management plan for Leith Hill
Divide this into several sections 1) What are
the current problems faced by Leith
Hill? Remember to think about the impacts you
found on the fieldtrip. Mention the idea of
sustainably managing Leith Hill 2) What
strategies would you use to manage the area more
effectively? You could include an annotated map
to show where you would put your different
strategies. Try to give reasons for each
technique. Try to link it to the research you
did at Box Hill, e.g. I would put limestone
scalpings on the paths around the tower as this
is effective at Box Hill and scored ___. 3)
Which stakeholders would agree with your plan and
which stakeholders would not? Give reasons.
