Text of Retail video
One sort of business we are all familiar with are
retail stores. Retail stores sell goods. This one
sells mostly kites and toys. In small towns
retail stores are found in the downtown areas,
but today many retail stores or businesses are
also found in shopping malls. This is a bicycle
store. The products it sells are bicycles. The
people who work in the business are called
employees. Some of the employees are sales
people. They help the customer, the person who
buys the goods, decide which bike to buy. In this
bicycle shop there are also service people who
fix bicycles. This is another type of employee.
This person is the owner of the bicycle shop, he
is called an employer. This retail store sells
one kind of productbicycles. But some retail
stores sell many kinds of products. A grocery
store sells many kinds of foods, but it also
sells other things like vitamins, school
supplies, books, and cooking utensils. A video
store is a retail business that deals with
another kind of product, it sells and rents
videos.

Text of Manufacturing Video
Here is another retail food store, it sells
bakery goods. It, too, has sales people as
employees. However, it also makes the goods its
selling. This is called manufacturing. So this
business has employees who manufacture the
bread. But where does the grain come from to
make the bread? In order to answer this question,
we travel out of the city and into the
country. The grain comes from the farmers who
grow it. Farming is another kind of business. It
is a business that deals with basic resources,
such as the land the wheat is grown on. Many
farms and ranches are family owned. The family
does most of the work. In a way, the
family members are both employer and employee.
14
Manufacturing text continued...
Once the goods, in this case, the grain, are
harvested, they are brought to a grain elevator
where they are sold. This is a business that buys
and sells grain. It might sell the grain to a
bakery to make bread. Another business that deals
with natural resources is the oil business. The
workers here are drilling a well for oil. Oil is
turned into gasoline, which powers our cars, but
oil is also turned into plastics which are used
in manufacturing many products, such as these
wheels for roller blades. .Here is a very
different kind of manufacturing company called
Celestial Seasonings. It makes teas. The raw
materials for teas are plants, which are
harvested all over the world. The plants then
have to be processed and packaged... and they are
eventually sold in retail stores.

Text of services video
The kind of businesses we will look at next are
called services. They are called services because
they do something for somebody rather than make
something. For instance, this man fixes shoes.
This business is called a shoe repair service. A
bank is another business that is a service. It
keeps your money safely stored away. The bank may
give your parents a loan to buy a home or car.
Services are just like other businesses in that
they have employees and employers. Here is the
banks president. Restaurants provide another
type of service we all use. Eating out is fun,
and easier when youre in a hurry. Lets take a
look at one other service business. This man is a
veterinarian. He takes care of sick animals. Much
like the farmer, he does the work and he is his
own boss.
