Other Comments
  • Potential safety issue if dialing 511 while
    driving
  • Metro Detroit information needs are different
    than for rural Michigan
  • Should look at pursuing private partnerships
  • Could complement or compete with AAA Michigan,
depending on how 511 is developed and presented
  • May reduce non-emergency calls to 911 centers in
    rural areas
  • Tourism is very interested in participating in
    511
  • Lack of cell phone coverage in rural areas might
    limit 511 accessibility
  • Needs lots of marketing to be successful
  • How do you quantify benefits versus costs?

11
Telecom Roundtable Discussion
  • Call routing relatively easy to implement for
    landline
  • Wireless routing more complex because of
geography and network configuration, but still
    doable
  • Most landline carriers will assess one-time
    routing fee
  • Coordinate 511 routing for smaller carriers
    through Telecommunications Association of
    Michigan
  • Dont foresee needing to involve Michigan Public
    Service Commission
  • Carriers to provide cost estimates on routing 511

12
Outcomes

  • Tourism (Travel Michigan)
  • Michigan State Police (911 Coordinator and
    Emergency Management)
