Energy Management and Climate Change at Stanford
  • Presented to TIPS by
  • Susan Kulakowski, Campus Energy Manager
  • 4/18/2007

Our Principal Reservoir - The Sierra Snow Pack -
Is Shrinking
  • Warmer Winters Have
  • Reduced snow pack
  • Led to earlier snow melt
  • Decreased spring runoff by 10
  • Major effects on water supply, Cal Fed, and Delta
    system

What is CA doing about it?
  • Conducting an inventory
  • Setting reduction goals
  • Taking action now
  • Planning strategies for the future

7
GHG Emission Reduction Goals
  • Governor Schwarzeneggers Executive Order
  • California must reduce GHG emissions to
  • 2000 levels by 2010
  • 1990 levels by 2020
  • 80 below 1990 levels by 2050
  • Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 (AB32)
  • California must reduce GHG emissions to 20 below
    1990 levels by 2020
  • Regulations will be issued in 2012, but early
    action encouraged

8
Taking Action Now
  • Achieve 50 statewide recycling goal
  • Forest conservation
  • Renewable Portfolio Standard
  • Utility energy efficiency programs

9
Planning Actions for the Future
  • Vehicle climate change standards
  • Reforestation
  • Smart land use and intelligent transportation
  • Renewable Portfolio Standard (33 by 2020)

Setting Goals
  • Underway
  • Looking at state and other research universities
    for models
  • Sustainability Working Group will provide
    recommendations to President Hennessy

13
Taking Action Now
  • Building HVAC Re-commissioning
  • 2nd-Generation T8 Lighting Retrofits
  • Energy Retrofit Program
  • Energy Conservation Incentive Program
  • Transportation Demand Management
  • Recycling
  • Water Retrofit Program
  • Small-scale solar electricity generation
  • 12 Building Energy Study Capital Projects

14
12 Building Energy Study Capital Projects
  • A dozen of Stanfords buildings use almost 30 of
    our energy!
  • Energy consultants studied the buildings in 2004
    and made recommendations for improvement
  • All feasible improvements costing 50,000 or less
    are complete
  • 15 million allocated for the big-ticket
    retrofits (500,000 - 5 million each)
  • Keck retrofit done, Stauffer 1 well underway
  • Stauffer 2 and Gates projects in design

15
Planning Actions for the Future
  • TBD, but could include
  • Additional building energy studies and capital
    projects
  • Stricter requirements for new construction
  • More installation of solar power on campus
  • Greater use of biodiesel, other alternative fuels
    or electricity in fleet vehicles
  • Re-powering cogen plant with more efficient
    and/or renewable technologies
  • Purchase of off-campus renewable energy and
    carbon offsets
  • Re-thinking how the university conducts its
    business

16
What can YOU do about climate change?
  • Conduct an inventory
  • Set goals
  • Take action now
  • Plan actions for the future

17
Conducting an Inventory
  • Many personal inventory (also called carbon
    footprint) calculators are available, e.g.,
  • Acterras Cool It Campaign
  • EPAs Personal Emissions Calculator
  • Parking Transportation Services Commute Cost
    and Carbon Emissions Calculator

18
Setting Goals
  • Think about the other benefits of your goals
  • Im going to drive less Ill get to read on the
train instead of sitting in traffic
  • Im going to use energy more efficiently Ill
get to write a smaller check to PGE every month
  • Im going to reduce the amount of water I waste
Ill get to spend less time mowing
  • Try some easy, short-term actions to get started

19
Take Action Now
  • Use an alternative commute method one day each
    week this quarter
  • Check your cars tire inflation the next time you
    stop for gas
  • Replace incandescent light bulbs in your home and
    office with CFLs (lt5 each)
  • Eat at least one vegetarian meal every day this
    month
  • Keep windows and doors closed when heat or AC is
    running
  • Lower your hot water heater temperature to 120 F
  • Hang your laundry out to dry this summer
  • Adjust your irrigation timer for the seasons

20
Plan Actions for the Future
  • Replace your commute vehicle with one that gets
    better miles/gallon
  • Add insulation to your attic
  • Buy some department bicycles to ride to meetings
    and lunch
  • Upgrade appliances with products that have the
Energy Star or Water Sense label
  • Reduce lawn area and install a drip irrigation
    system for other plants
  • Install a solar hot water heater
  • Buy land in Canada?
