Background
  • Nepal is landlocked, least developed with per
    capita income US 220
  • Total 128 thousand teachers, 44 trained
  • 49 people under the poverty line
  • Only 53 are literate

Current System of In service Teacher Training
  • Different Departmental Institutions are providing
    Teacher Training
  • NCED (Long term in service teacher training for
    primary level)
  • BPEP (Resource centre based re-current short term
    teacher training for primary level)
  • SEDP (In service short term teacher training in 5
    core subjects for secondary teacher)
  • DEC

Use of telecommunication
  • Started with the establishment of Radio Nepal in
    1950
  • Nepal initiated its efforts towards the use of
    information technology in education in 1978
  • Establish Radio Education Teachers Training
    Project (RETTP) for training of the untrained
    teachers through radio

Objectives of Distance Education Center (DEC)
  • Providing in-service training each year for
    10,000 untrained primary school teacher
  • Daily broadcasting various educational programs
    on non-formal, tourism program, population,
    health, agriculture, environment and womens
    education, children program and teacher training
    program
  • It is planning to distribute audio cassettes of
    produced program and
  • establish own radio station

Problems
  • Large parts of the country is very remote and do
    not have any road linkage
  • Most of the areas no electricity facility
  • No network between different areas
  • NTV covers only 40 areas
  • People can not afford TV
  • Small market
  • Lack of financial and trained human resources

Problems
  • Lack of explicit government policy
  • Lack of institutional support to software
    developers
  • Many people, either the decision-makers or the
    school teachers, are still unaware about the
    important of modern technology

Conclusion
  • Need clear vision and explicit policy of
    Government
  • Establish separate government institutions for
    pre service teacher training
  • Coverage of television should be increased
  • Need of government and private investment
  • NCED and DEC should emphasis to the primary level
    teacher training through PTTC
