Title: Night: A Visual Review of Elies Journey into Darkness

1
NightA Visual Review of Elies Journey into
Darkness
2
  • At the beginning of the novel, Elie and his
family are living in Sighet, in the region of
Transylvania in Romania. As the Nazis take over,
the Jews of Sighet are forced to move into
    ghettos.

3
  • After being transferred from the large ghetto to
the smaller ghetto in Sighet, Elie and his family
are finally loaded into cattle cars to be moved
    to concentration camps.

4
  • After being loaded in cattle cars, Elie and his
family are transported from Sighet to the
    Auschwitz concentration camp system in
    Nazi-occupied Poland.

5
Auschwitz Camp System Birkenau, Auschwitz, and
Buna.
6
Auschwitz II - Birkenau
  • Upon their arrival at Birkenau (the reception
center of Auschwitz) , Elie is separated from his
    mother and sisters.

7
Auschwitz I
  • At first, conditions at the main camp of
Auschwitz seem better than Birkenau. But Elie
quickly learns that this is no convalescent home.

8
Auschwitz III - Buna
  • After their stay in the main camp, both Elie and
his father are moved to Buna the labor camp.

9
The Auschwitz Experience
  • Unlike many of their comrades, both Elie and his
father survive the grim realities of the
    Auschwitz camp system.

10
Evacuation of Auschwitz and the death march
  • As the Soviet Army drew closer and closer to
Auschwitz from the East, the surviving prisoners
were evacuated on a deadly march West

11
Gleiwitz (Subcamp of Auschwitz)
  • After a dangerous march through the wintery
landscape, the surviving Jews from Auschwitz were
briefly installed at a smaller camp in Poland
    called Gleiwitz.

12
Second Railroad Journey
  • As the Soviets kept advancing from the East, the
Nazis kept trying to push their captives further
West into Germany. The survivors of Auschwitz
were taken to a snowy field divided by railroad
tracks and once again loaded onto cattle cars.

13
Buchenwald
  • After their second railroad journey, Elie and his
    father arrive at Buchenwald (another
concentration camp in the heart of Germany).

14
Surviving Buchenwald
  • At the final camp, Elie struggles to keep his
    father well and alive.

15
Liberation of Buchenwald
  • Elie is finally rescued from the Holocaust as
Buchenwald is liberated by the Allied powers.
Unfortunately, Elies father does not survive his
    stay at Buchenwald.

16
The end of the novel
  • Though he physically survives the Holocaust, Elie
Weisel is a changed man. No longer the fierce
and idealistic believer, his faith has been worn
down and almost destroyed through these
    experiences. Elie, when describing himself,
admits From the depths of the mirror, a corpse
gazed back at me (Weisel 109).
