Miles Davis
3Miles Dewey Davis III lived from May 26th,
1926 to September 28th, 1991
4Miles Davis grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois
5His family had a big house in the city and a 200
acre ranch in the country where Miles loved to
spend time riding horses when he was a boy.
6His father was a dentist.
7His mother was a music teacher!
8Miles Davis started playing trumpet when he was
13.
9Miles played his first professional gig when he
was 17. On the gig, he met the greatDizzy
Gillespie and Charlie Parker.
10Dizzy and Bird were playing a type of jazz called
Bebop, which was created by them, along with
some other New York musicians.
11Miles Davis liked Bebop music so much that as
soon as he graduated from high school, he moved
to New York. When he got there, he found Bird
and started playing in his band.
12Miles liked Birds music but he didnt want to
play exactly like him. He played with a more
relaxed sound. Throughout his life, he continued
to change the way he played so that he could make
music the way he wanted.
13The Birth of Cool
- This is Miles Davis first major recording as a
leader. - The instrumentation included French horn and tuba
which was unusual for the time. - This album inspired a style of jazz called Cool
Jazz.
14The First Quintet
- This is the first of two famous quintets
- led by Miles.
- This rhythm section
- is considered one of
- the best in jazz.
- A rhythm section usually
- consists of a combination
- of piano, bass, guitar, drums.
15Working with Gil Evans
- Miles makes a lot of music with the arranger, Gil
Evans. - The music often uses an instrumentation with many
instruments of the orchestra.
16The Second Quintet
- The drummer, Tony Williams was only 17 when he
began playing with this group. - They played in a style that people began to call
Freebop. - After a while they began to experiment with a
fusion of jazz and rock sounds.
17Electric Miles
- Miles started using electric instruments.
- Helped to create a style of music called
Fusion. - Fusion is a combination of Jazz and Rock n
Roll.
