    not treated very well.

Citizenship
  • In Rome, being a citizen meant a lot.
  • It usually meant you were wealthy.
  • It always meant you had respect.
  • It also gave you legal rights automatically.

7
The Story of Paul (Acts 22 22-29)
  • Christian apostle Paul is arrested because the
people of Jerusalem are angry at him for
    preaching to non-Jews.
  • The Roman commander orders him beaten so he can
find out why the people are angry.
  • Paul asks the Roman commander Is it legal for
you to flog a Roman citizen who hasnt even been
    found guilty? (2225)

8
  • The commander asks how Paul became a citizen
(because it costs a lot of money) and Paul tells
    him he was born one.
  • The commander is scared he put a citizen in
    chains and releases Paul.

Imagine This
  • Some rich guy meets you at the front door of your
house and announces he paid the bank and so now
    the house is his.
  • He explains that you will follow his rules and
pay him rent but you can stay
  • You walk in the door and see
a 60 inch plasma TV in every
    room all with 200 channels
and hooked up to an Xbox 360.
  • How would you feel?

24
Entertainment
  • All this was free to people who lived in the
    Empire, not just citizens.
  • The Empire wanted to keep the people distracted.
  • If they were busy having fun they might not
    notice all the problems!
