SMOG

• SMOG has become the worst factor that is
  contributing to global warming, and not many
  countries are doing anything to improve it. There
  are many ways to decrease this problem, for
  example, putting laws that will make it possible
  for less cars to transit, or also asking people
  that want to help reduce this by conserving
  energy at the homes, and at work. Even though
  doing these things always helps. many countries
  do not do much because it can also affect the
  their economy in various ways. For example,
  countries that are doing things addressed to the
  SMOG problems are Canada, China and Chile. Both
  countries are using various ways to solve their
  problems, also involving their people.

• In Canada, 1990, the Canadian Council of
  Ministers of the Environment (CCME) decided to
  adopt a Management Plan that was designed to
  reduce smog-producing emissions across the
  country. What this the Management first planned
  to do was to develop regulations and other
  initiative to lower NOx and VOC. Currently, many
  control initiatives are being applied, which
  include car inspection and maintenance programs
  such as "AirCare" in British Columbia and they
  are also controlling programs for the control of
  commercial emission sources in the Montreal
  areas, which are involved in paint application,
  printing, and dry cleaning.

• Also, In Vancouver, the regional district has
  approved an Air Quality by-law that includes new
  measures designed so that they limit mobile
  emission sources. In Ontario, people have been
  informed of many ways they can help reduce smog.
  These include Trying not to use a vehicle as
  much, and instead do walking, biking taking
  public transit and car pooling, avoid using gas
  powered machines, use solvents that are low in
  VOCs, and plant trees to give shade in the
  summertime, which means that there is less need
  for air conditioning.

• Chinas air pollution problems are currently
  getting worse. The government has told young, old
  and people with respiratory problems to stay
  inside as much as possible. Because China is such
  a high-tech country with huge amounts of
  production (from factories) they create huge
  amounts of smog. China has come up with some
  ideas to try to reduce the smog output. China
  shut down 156 small coal-fired power plants.
  Another thing china is doing is that one million
  cars will be taken off Beijing roads in August
  for a two week trial to test how the smog will be
  then. Over the past four years, Chinas government
  has made efforts to clean up its own act, by
  requiring that the city's aging fleet of 17,000
  diesel taxis and minibuses be upgraded with
  catalytic converters or replaced by
  cleaner-burning vehicles, powered by propane, for
  example.

• As well as in China, in Chile the government has
  been doing many this to avoid smog. In this
  country, more specifically city, smog is a huge
  factor in the lives of people. Santiago is in
  between the five cities that have the most smog
  worldwide, and this is why many things have to be
  taken care of so that this is reduced, for
  example, having Transantiago. It is the new plan
  of modernization of public transport that will
  modify completely the form in which people travel
  around the city of Santiago, and will result in
  making the form of quality in which people live
  in significantly better.

• This was a project impelled by the government of
  Chile in order to decrease the use of fuel and
  the emission of gases and particles that vehicles
  generate in order to contribute to the
  decontamination of the city. The government of
  Chile also came up with different things to
  contribute, for example, the restriction of
  vehicles which consists in there being rules for
  anyone who owns a car to be able to drive. This
  means that the Regional Ministry of Transport of
  the Metropolitan Region stated that vehicles
  without the catalytic converter must not drive
  during certain dates. This is done because it
  decreases the number of vehicles that transit
  which results in less emission of pollutants.

• Chile, China, and Canada are doing different but
  also helpful things to contribute
  decontamination. Even though these are only two
  countries out of the whole world, the fact that
  they are decreasing this factor is already a plus
  for global warming. We must get more countries to
  contribute to this, and make the world a better
  place, so that one day, humans can live without
  having to make sure if they are affecting global
  warming, because it will not be a problem
  anymore, hopefully.
