  • We are installing A-SMGCS with Safety Nets in
    major airports
  • We will link AMAN-DMAN and A-SMGCS

The airport in the air transport system
  • Seen from EUROCONTROLs (and FAAs) point of
    view, the airport is a black hole that aircraft
    disappear into?
  • The only problem is
  • quite often they come back
  • But nobody really knows where and when

  • The following issues are all par of future
    operational concepts
  • 4D trajectories
  • Accurate prediction
  • Increased efficiency
  • Reduced fuel-burn
  • User preferred trajectories

Future operational problems
  • How does the user know what he prefers.
  • How can he perform a trade-off between several
    scenarios?
  • To reduce fuel-burn, I want to start the
    push-back as late as possible, but still assure
    that the aircraft can reach its take-off slot,
    to do that
  • I need to be sure that the aircraft is ready for
    push-back
  • I need to know the time to get from the gate to
    the runway.

Future operational problems
  • In SESAR we want to monitor the progress of the
    aircraft turn-round process
  • What are the benefits of that?
  • Increased efficiency
  • Improved departure punctuality
  • How can we demonstrate these benefits?
  • We need a model.

Airport Land-side modelling
  • ACARE strategic aims for Europe
  • Reduce passenger time in the airport (15-30
    minutes)
  • Reduce delay (10 minutes average)
  • by optimizing processes and increase efficiency

  • The Airport Research Center (Aachen Germany)
    supported by EUROCONTROL has developed a model
    called CAST
  • This was initially only covering the terminal
    building
  • We are now developing CAST to cover all airport
    processes in an integrated way

What can we do with CAST?
  • Validation
  • Look into the potential increase in efficiency
    when continuously monitoring the progress of all
    major processes
  • Identify advantages of linking landside and
    airside processes
  • Better understand the predictability we can
    achieve
  • Operations
  • Support airlines in their decision making by
    providing different scenarios
  • Better understand the full effect of possible
    scenarios
  • Better predict taxi-times and avoid bottle-necks

How much is there to gain?
  • Studies undertaken by the Performance Review
    Commission show that up to 20 of space capacity
    can be released in the en-route system without
    any cost if departure times could be estimated
    correctly
