GO-Time For Northeast!

GO-Time For Northeast!
3
  • The re-development
  • brass ring is within reach now for the
  • Central Avenue corridor.

4
  • The urban planning is freshly in place

5
  • We know that a balance of ownership and rental
housing density is needed to support local trade
    and transit.
  • We estimate that over 1500 units are needed.
  • Monroe Village and Central Lofts total 125.
  • There are 77 more in the pipeline - between
  • Jac Flats and Lowry Lofts.
  • 52 of the 202 total are ownership.

6
  • We have a private sector lead investor and
catalyst Majdi Wadi, owner of Holy Land.
  • His expanding Central Lowry operation, his new
bakery, and his partnership MetroPlains on Lowry
Lofts, are together bringing XX jobs, 32 housing
units, and will pay an estimated XXX in property
    taxes yearly.
  • Cover Biz Journal

7
  • The Minneapolis Arts District now has the
largest community art tour in the universe
according to research done by actual artists.
  • Map of Arts District And Central Corridor

8
  • Art-A-Whirl each May
  • Over 30,000 attendance in 2008.
  • It is organized by the Northeast Minneapolis
Arts Association, who do not have a full time
staff and who pull it off without one nickel of
    City money.
  • Amazing!

9
  • Shoreham Yards is our chance to create hundreds
    of jobs.

10
  • In fact, not many places have situations where
they can balance housing, a mainstreet retail
district, an arts district, and job creation on a
    major commercial corridor

11
  • There is also currently substantial opportunity
for re-developing Central while maximizing the
    economic development
  • potential of the arts district.

12
  • Unfortunately, Northeast is stuck. These are
    all projects that are stalled.
  • Again, go to www.necdc.org
  • Same map as 1, but
  • with stalled highlighted
  • Add the Hollywood and Beltrami

13
  • Northeast also has a recent history of not
    being able to implement planning.
  • The covers of the
  • 1997 Making of
  • 2002 Arts Action
  • 200? Above the

14
  • So, what holds Northeast back?
  • Why can t we get things done?
  • Pics of the Hollywood,
  • Toms, Jac Flats, and 1401, Beltrami, the
curious case of the Kroc Center.

15
  • Northeast is weak politically.
  • Community development in a strong council
  • system is all about your Council Member or
Members competing for attention and resources.
Northeast hasnt been doing well in this
    department.

16
  • NE lost a lot of its power when what was once a
    mixed working class
  • community with a super strong common identity,
was split into 13 NRP neighborhoods.
  • Now, with the NRP closing at the end of the year
and likely becoming a City department,
neighborhood associations will have less power,
less of a voice, and some will just stop
    functioning.
  • NE Neighborhood map

17
  • Northeast is neither affluent enough to have
influence nor is it in rough enough shape to
    merit intervention.
  • City income map

18
  • So, we have to take responsibility together to
let our elected officials know that it is Go-Time
for Northeast. This is the Go-Time card. You
can add your own thoughts. If you put the name
    of the
  • elected official you wish it to go to, we will
finish the address and get it out in the mail.
  • The Go-time card

19
  • Here are some telephone numbers of elected
    Officials to call often!
  • I am calling to let you know that it is
  • Go-time for Northeast.

20
  • We are also circulating a sign up for Action
Alerts. This is a system to alert the community
if there is an important community meeting or if
calls to City Hall or elsewhere are needed to
    help get something unstuck.

21
  • I am closing by letting you know that the
  • Jac Flats Artist ownership artist housing that
    NE CDC
  • is doing is an uphill battle for what is a
small, young organization. Anything you can do
to support the project is appreciated.
  • Thank you.
