Going Green
  • A PowerPoint presentation by
  • Ubah, Rico, Nasra and Ngemi
  • of Manor Primary School

2
What does going green mean?
  • Helping the environment
  • Reducing
  • Reusing
  • Recycling

3
Reducing
  • Waste prevention means consuming and throwing
    away less.

4
How can you reduce?
  • Shopping lists help you buy just what you need
rather than spending money on stuff you wont
use. It also means less packaging ends up in the
    bin.
  • If you have a baby then consider using real
nappies instead of disposable ones because around
50 of all waste generated by household with a
baby is made up of nappies!
  • Dont use disposable products like paper plates,
knifes and forks, razors. Use things you can wash
    instead.
  • Buy loose fruit and vegetables instead of
pre-packaged ones rapped in plastic to save
    packaging waste.

5
Reusing
Reusing is a key component of waste
reduction. Many everyday items can have more than
one use . Reusing products extends their lives
and keeps them out of the bin for longer. Reusing
items again is cheaper saving money for you and
helping the environment!
6
How can we reuse?
Use a canvas shopping bag whenever you can.
Unlike plastic bags, they wont split apart or
dig into your hands when youre loaded down. Did
you know a staggering 150,000,000 plastic bags
are used in the UK every week? And each one can
take hundreds of years to rot away in Landfill
sites!
7
More reusing tips
  • Use your shopping bag as many times as possible.
  • Remember to take bags with you every time you go
    shopping.
  • Keep spare bags in your car or at work so youre
    never without them.
  • If you have furniture you dont want ,ask family
and friends if they know anyone who would like
    it.
  • Invest in stronger reusable bags , sometimes
    known as bags for life.

Choose to reuse
8
Whatever you choose, choose to reuse!
9
What is recycling?
  • Recycling is the conversion of waste products
    into new materials.
  • In other words recycling things like paper, to
save trees. If we dont recycle we will lose
trees and then we will lose flowers and
    eventually we will die.
  • Recycling is one of the best ways for you to have
a positive impact on the world in which we live.
Recycling is important to both the natural
    environment and us.
  • We must act fast as the amount of waste we create
    is increasing all the time!

10
Why Do We Need to Recycle?
11
Paper Saving Energy
  • We are concerned about the amount of paper which
    is being wasted.
  • If people do not recycle paper we will run out of
natural resources such as trees and without trees
theyll be no oxygen to breathe and the human
    race will be obliterated.
  • Did you know that For every tonne of paper
recycled 17 trees are spared, 7000 gallons of
water is saved and 4200 KWh less electricity is
    used? (Waste Watch)

12
Landfills
  • The landfills are filling up, and in 2010 all
landfills will be full. THAT IS JUST TWO YEARS
    FROM NOW!!!
  • Also landfills release green house gases (carbon
dioxide) and harmful chemicals which damage the
    environment.

Once all the landfills are full we will need to
find new places to put our rubbish, taking up
space that could be used for a better purpose
like a park.
13
how to recycle
You can recycle in all different ways such as
orange bags and green boxes.
But remember to separate the materials while
recycling
14
what can you recycle?
  • What you can recycle in your orange bags
  • Food cans and drink cans
  • News papers and magazines
  • Junk mail
  • Directories (but remember not Yellow Pages)
  • Light cards such as cereal boxes
  • Plastic bottles and other plastic materials
  • A roll of 13 orange bags will be delivered to
your door step every three months. Plus if you
run out of orange bags you can go to the library
    for more.

15
Recycling At Manor Primary School
Every class in the school has a paper recycling
box. In the staff room we have recycling boxes
for plastic, paper, glass and aluminium. Once a
year we take part in the yellow woods challenge
which is when they recycle yellow pages into pet
bedding
16
Our Eco Team
  • We also have an eco team who promote recycling in
    school.
  • So far
  • They have put compost bins in the nursery.
  • Have regular litter picking days.
  • Take all our glass to the recycling bank.
