2
What is the Challenge?
  • Launched on Earth Day 2008.
  • EPA Region 10 challenged federal facilities to
reduce carbon footprint by reducing emissions by
5 in next year in two of four categories
    energy, transportation, waste, and/or water.

3
Who can participate?
  • All federal facilities within Region 10 (Alaska,
Idaho, Oregon, and Washington) are eligible.
  • Federal facilities outside Region 10 are
encouraged to participate, but will not be
eligible for recognition through the Challenge
    awards program.

4
How do you participate?
  • Step 1. Set Goals.

  • Set a goal of at least a 5 reduction to be
achieved in the next year in two of the four
    challenge focus areas
  • 1. Energy 2. Transportation
  • 3. Waste 4. Water

6

  • 3. Waste 4. Water
  • Reduce KwHs Electricity
  • Reduce Cubic Feet Natural Gas
  • Reduce Gallons Fuel Oil
  • Increase Renewable Energy Purchased

8
Step 1. Set Goals.
  • Set a goal of at least a 5 reduction to be
achieved in the next year in two of the four
    challenge focus areas
  • 1. Energy 2. Transportation
  • 3. Waste 4. Water
  • Reduce Tons Waste Generated
  • Reduce Pounds Office Paper Purchased
  • Increase Office Paper Recycled Content
  • Increase Tons Mixed Recyclables and
  • Electronics Recycled

9
Step 1. Set Goals.
  • Set a goal of at least a 5 reduction to be
achieved in the next year in two of the four

  • 3. Waste 4. Water
  • Reduce Gallons Water

10
Step 2. Establish Baseline.
  • Your baseline can be for 2006 or 2007.
  • Example. Energy focus area Determine total usage
in 2006 or 2007 of KwHs electricity, cubic feet
natural gas, gallons fuel oil, and renewable
    energy.

Example Energy Actions to Achieve Goals
  • Use compact fluorescent lamps. Choose T8s rather
    than T12s.
  • Enable power management features on computers and
monitors to allow them to sleep or shutdown
    when inactive.
  • Purchase renewable electricity and renewable
    energy certificates (RECs).

17
Example Transportation Actions to Achieve Goals
  • Use video or teleconferencing during meetings to
    reduce the need for transport.
  • Use web-based meetings and conference calls for
    training and collaboration.
  • Allow employees to work from home or work a
compressed work schedule to reduce employee
    commute trips.

18
Example Waste Actions to Achieve Goals
  • Provide recycling and composting bins at
    employees work areas.
  • Make sure recycling is collected regularly.
  • Print on both sides of the paper. Implement a
formal policy to print and copy double-sided when
    possible.
  • Re-set printer margins to 0.75 on all sides.
Reducing margins to 0.75 on all sides could
result in a total reduction of paper by 4.75.
  • Purchase products with a high recycled content.

19
Example Water Actions to Achieve Goals
  • Minimize the use of water for cleaning purposes.
  • Water your landscape more efficiently adjust
sprinkler heads, use drip irrigation, landscape
with native plants that require less water.
  • Use cold water rather than hot water as often as
    possible.

20
Step 4. Measure Results.
  • Measure your results at year end.
  • Use the results tracking form to report your
    results. It estimates
  • Total pounds CO2 reduced
  • Carbon equivalents for total pounds CO2 reduced
    and
  • Estimated cost savings.

    Environmental Leadership and Green Government

    achievement, a plaque commemorating your
activities, and a recognition of achievement
    ceremony in early September.
