Data Acquisition by Video Detection
CONCERT System
Video Detection Server
Uses Video Data for- Calculate travel times-
Sign control decisions- Input for Incident
Management Module
Provide Traffic Data- Speed- Occupancy- Volume
Cameras
Strategic Management
Provide Alarms - Incident Messages- Sudden
Speed Drop- Wrong Way Driver
- Verificcation using CCTV video images

Incident Detection Algorithms
  • VOccDiff
  • California
  • Vmin
  • Transition Analysis
  • Exponential Smoothing
  • Speed Alarm (available from video detectors)
  • ZOcc Alarm (available from video detectors)
  • Speed Drop Alarm (available from video detectors)

8
Speed-Occupancy-Difference
  • Link related situation analysis
  • German standard
  • Calculation of the speed and density differences
    between two consecutive cross sections
  • Can be calibrated automatically to consider
normal differences of traffic flow at cross
    sections

Transition Indicator for Flow and Speed
  • Detector related situation analysis
  • Uses un-smoothed measurements
  • Smoothing by the parameter n
  • Detects transitions between traffic states

Results of Multiple Algorithms Combined Using
Fuzzy Logic
Fuzzy Logic allows
  • A computer to model the real world the same way
    that people do.
  • Get maximum benefit out of the existing traffic
    data.
  • Derive one concise interpretation of the
situation out of different inputs which lead for
their own to results of different significance.
  • Weight the different inputs, to consider
    different traffic situations.
  • Get stable output despite fluctuations in the
    input variables.
  • Reduce the number of false alarms.

11
Single Detector Fuzzy Approach
12
Input into Fuzzy
  • Input results of local or link related traffic
    models, alarms and measurement data

Speed
VOccDiff
13
Output of Fuzzy
  • Incident Probability on link between two
    detectors
  • An Incident Probability above threshold 1 gives
    warning message
  • An Incident Probability above threshold 2 gives
    alarm message

Incident Probability
14
Response Plans / STRAMO
  • Logical Operation / Combinations of Variables
  • IF, AND, OR, THEN, END IF
  • Potential Triggers
  • Time / Date (Events)
  • Confirmed Incident
  • Traffic Situation (LOS, Speed, Volume, Travel
    Times)
  • Range or Threshold
  • Parking Availability
  • Time Interval During Which Threshold is Exceeded
  • Status of System Devices (DMS)
  • Current Response Plan
  • Operator (Manual)

15
Response Plans / STRAMO - Outputs
  • CCTV Selection / Orientation
  • DMS Messages
  • Text / Speed Limit, Lane Control
  • Signal Timing Plan
  • Fax / Email Messages
  • Operator Instruction Box / GUI
  • Execute External Programs
