2Creating a Climate of responsibility
- At the current rate of carbon emissions, global
average temperatures will rise 2C by 2050
according to research by the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change.
3Guinea
- Where I live, people (Guineans and expats that
have been in Guinea for many years) often comment
that the dry season is drier and the rainy season
is shorter. There is certainly less water
available, wells run dry that did not used to and
the river (the Milo, a tributary for the Niger)
is lower. It tends to be linked to deforestation,
both here in Upper Guinea and in the Forest
Region to the South. The area called the Forest
is being logged massively by international
companies.
Pumping water into a community hold because the
well has run dry
4- Local CBOs are springing up involved in tree
planting, but environmental education is not
strong. In my view there is potential in the
local culture for community based conservation (
fiercely protected sacred forests, a strong
pro-life tendency that bans cutting down a tree
that is in bud or has a nest with baby birds in
it) but people often say that they are too poor
to invest in planting trees that wont help them
for many years. Those that are planting trees are
pretty determined despite many set backs and not
that much international support. - Jocelyn Donald

5Unless urgent action is taken now the world faces
these terrifying consequences
- 250 million people will be forced to leave their
homes between now and 2050. - Acute water shortages for 1-3 billion people
- 30 million more people going hungry as
agricultural yields go into recession across the
globe - Sea levels edging towards increases of up to 95cm
by the end of the century, submerging 18 of
Bangladesh.
6India
- Periods of heavy rainfall over a very short
period of time have been increasing over the last
ten years. This is not usual. The frequency of
cloud-bursts is increasing, when there can be
60mm of rain in five minutes. There have been two
of these in the last three years and these
werent happening 30 years ago (in the northern
mountainous areas). We are seeing many incidences
of flash floods even in desert areas where we
experience droughts. (EFICOR)
7- For the last five years we had no good rains and
then last year we had flooding. It was
devastating for us. Eight people lost their lives
and more than 1,000 houses collapsed in the
district (Balangir). It was a shock to the people
because almost all the rivers were swollen, many
trees were uprooted, houses collapsed and animals
died. Crops were ruined and even now, many people
have been unable to rebuild their homes they
lost everything. (TK Joy) Tearfund Partner

9Why climate change, why now?
- The current science around climate change states
that we need to keep temperature rises below 2c
if we are to avoid catastrophic climate change. - Decisions made in the next year or two, in the UK
and globally, will determine whether this is
possible or not.
10Climate change is a justice issue
- People who are most reliant on the weather to
survive, and are least protected from extreme
changes, are the poorest. Climate change is
already affecting these people.
11Corporate accountability is vital in tackling
climate change
- Britains carbon emissions are officially thought
to make up 2 of those emitted globally. - However, if you take into account the pollution
caused by companies based in, or trading from the
UK finance from banks, imports, exports and
multinational companies
12- Britain is actually responsible for 15 20 of
the worlds carbon emissions.
13Whats the plan?
We will keep calling for companies to made
accountable for their social and environmental
impact both in the UK and in Europe, highlighting
how vital this is not only for social justice,
but to avoid catastrophic climate change.
14Actions
- Our current campaign goals call for companies to
be accountable for their impact on communities
and the environment. - We will also join with Christian Aid in calling
for mandatory carbon reporting for UK companies
as part of the Climate Change Bill this autumn.
15Unfinished Business MP3 petition
- Collect 24 hours of messages by Sound Check at
the end of February. - Local actions will raise the profile of the
corporate accountability issue, showing people
how central it is in tackling poverty and climate
change. - Present the petition to the UK government at a
strategic moment in 2009, tying it in with our
partners activities.
16MEP lobbying
- European elections are happening in June 2009.
- Groups meeting with their MEPs will highlight the
urgency of dealing with companies impact on
communities and the planet. - Greg will talk more about this later.
17Action on Climate Change
- Through Pray Posts and other actions, we will
be joining the larger movement against climate
change, praying and campaigning for the necessary
steps to keep global warming below 2c.
18Countdown to Copenhagen
- The Copenhagen Climate conference in December
2009 s where the successor to the Kyoto protocol
which expires in 2012 is set to be agreed. - As such it is the most important leaders
gathering since 1997 and will set the
international framework to combat climate change
into the next decade and beyond. - We need to take this opportunity to ensure a fair
and effective deal for the world's poorest. - Its probably the last chance the world has to
keep global temperature rises below 2C. - Well be joining a European movement calling for
a fair and effective deal to replace the Kyoto
protocol.
