Details on Poste ItalianesIT Initiatives
16
Enterprise Service BUS
16
  • To accelerate Poste Italiane IT architecture
development towards a SOA oriented architecture,
a new ESB (Enterprise Serial Bus) Platform has
been designed and will soon be available.
  • ESB will act as a backbone layer to integrate and
    manage enterprise services.
  • The ESB platform will deliver functions to build
new services, by assembling and rebuilding
existing ones, to answer business requirements
and their evolution thus minimizing deployment
    times and costs.
  • Poste Italiane new ESB will deliver, in a
suitable and reliable way, services such as
  • Orchestration functions
  • Security functions
  • Messaging functions
  • Smart routing functions
  • Transformation and processing functions.

17
SDP Mission
  • SDP (Service Delivery Platform) project aims
setting up a multi-channel SOA platform to drive
    all Poste Italiane distributing channels.
  • It bases on an remarkable existing front-office
systems technical development, achieved by a
centralization servers now available in everyone
of 14.000 Post offices (UP), all over the
Country, will be centralized in existing Data
    Center.

18
SDP new services and related benefits
  • New SDP delivers to the final customer and to
front office people valuable services such as
  • Carrello, which has shopping cart features
  • Cassa, which is a real electronic cash desk
  • Giornale di fondo, which allows accounting book
    activities for each post office
  • Gestione Periferiche, which allows input/output
    device management activities.

SDP benefits for business and ICT
  • SDP integration with other backend systems will
allow different pricing policies, basing on
customer profile and thus reacting promptly to
    new business requirements.
  • SDP will allow a customer multi-channel
management and thus it will allow new integrating
    services offer.
  • SDP will allow the centralized management of
material and non-material assets, thus enabling a
remarkable cost reduction and a valuable global
    operating efficiency improvement.

19
SDP Architecture
  • Presently, the mainframe directly comunicates
with every PDL (single user PC), thus gathering a
view on everyone of them, by a PU/LU connection,
    available on each user PC.

SDP will shift the existing client/server
architecture into a SOA compliant 3-layer one
MainFrame role is still the same
Presentation layer component is managed by the
single user PC
An Application server component is now used its
based on Open server and uses Webshere
Application Server
20
AUP Mission and Benefits
  • Automazione Uffici Postali (AUP), i.e. Post
Office Automation project consists in a
remarkable increase in the number of automatic
devices and infrastructures available on the
    whole Italian territory.
  • AUP Project bases on the following strategic
    concept
  • Key products de-materializing and customer
tailored interaction levels will improve postal
    network efficiency.

Postal Network Efficiency Improvement
()
() such as basic and advanced ATM, Self Service
kiosks, Electronic filing cabinet, etc.
21
AUP Architecture
  • AUP bases itself on the following operating
    3-layer architecture
  • Application Layer Infrastructure is made by
different kinds of ATM and Kiosks

22
Postino Telematico Mission and benefits
  • Postino Telematico service, i.e. Electronic
Postman, has been developed to better manage
precious deliveries, needing a delivery receipt
    signature.
  • It is based on a mobile and portable device
(PDA), allowing the postman to manage all
    delivery conditions and thus easing
  • Deliveries loading on support systems (including
    PDA),
  • Deliveries unloading and deduction, from systems,
  • Undelivered warning for undelivered objetcs.

New Devices ? More Services
Postino Telematico
23
Postino Telematico Architecture
  • Postino Telematico service is based on the
    following architecture

Cradle a base localized at specific
service-activated offices its role is allowing
data exchange between PDA and internal network.
IAM a system holding PTL authentication
credentials.
XTE a system playing as an interface between PTL
(PosteMobile system) and TT systems
(PosteItaliane systems) for data exchange.
PTL a central system supplying tracing features
to keep activities timing and sequence, and thus
allowing reporting and mobile device status
monitoring.
DM A device management platform its purpose is
to make night checks on mobile devices to control
functions availability and update sw, if needed.
24
.post domain and EPCM benefits
  • Poste Italiane is one of the main players in the
world in defining the Internet domain .post,
according to the guidelines of the UPU (Universal
Postal Union) and in collaboration with the ICANN
(Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and
    Numbers).
  • In next few years, Postal Operators from all over
the world could use the .post domain to offer
    innovative electronic services.

Why use .post domain?
  • To allign levels of communications, transaction
    security and certification to technological
standards of the most advanced Postal Operators
    all over the world.
  • To strengthen Postal Operators brands and their
role as Trusted Third Party in the digital world
    (eg. quality certification for e-commerce
    operators within the .post domain).
  • To ease digital services development, basing on
.post domain and world wide distribution of
    interoperable services and common standards,
aiming to create a trusted, stable, secure and
    innovative community.

25
.post domain and EPCM benefits
  • EPCM plays a crucial role in achieving .post
domain use benefits thanks to its own feature of
being a certified electronic stamp for any
    digital meanings.
  • Poste Italiane is already running two new digital
    postal services using the EPCM
  • Data Certa (Timestamp duty service)
  • PES for Bancoposta (Secure eMail).

EPCM benefits
The EPCM enable, both senders and recipients, to
  • Have the evidence of sending (unique and
    certified Date and time)
  • Verify the integrity of the content of the
    digital data transmitted
  • Have international interoperabilty for services
  • Use standard technological equipment and not
    specific ones
  • Use any type of e-mail address (potentially)

Access to some specific services is possible
only using postal provided Digital Mailbox
instead of traditional standard mail address

SOA Service-Oriented Architecture
  • Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a paradigm
    for organizing and utilizing distributed
capabilities that may be under the control of
    different ownership domains.
  • SOA is a means of organizing solutions that
promotes reuse, growth and interoperability. It
is not itself a solution to domain problems but
rather an organizing and delivery paradigm that
enables one to get more value from use both of
capabilities which are locally owned and those
    under the control of others.

OASIS SOA Reference Model TC
Specific Architectural Principles
  • Systems are composed of a loosely coupled
    collection of well-defined and interoperable
    network services and tools
  • Information is defined externally to any given
service or tool and is readily available to all
    authorized users
  • The architecture should encourage the use of
common solutions, designs, and services where
applicable. It should facilitate re-use of common
functionality, as opposed to re-creation of
    similar capabilities
