Options and Opportunities
O2 is a program designed to help students work
toward a career or occupation. Community Based
Learning or Cooperative Education is a major
component of O2, allowing students to explore a
variety of careers.
  • O2 is appropriate for students who
  • Wish to explore or develop skills in a community
    setting
  • Are interested in a career in the trades
  • Who prefer hands-on learning opportunities
  • Who prefer smaller class sizes
  • Entrance to the O2 program occurs in the
    students grade 10 year.

12
Academic Planning
Due to the diverse entrance requirements of
post-secondary institutions, students should
develop an academic plan that is both realistic
and attainable.
Nova Scotia High School graduation requirements
are not aligned with post-secondary requirements.
This may become a factor in course selection in
a students grade 11 and 12 year.
strive for excellence
13
Academic Planning
  • Students/Parents can explore career and
    post-secondary options by
  • Registering for Parents as Career Coaches
  • www.parentsascareercoaches.ca
  • Visiting their guidance counsellor
  • Exploring internet resources such as

www.careercruising.com user name
cpahs password careers

Academies of Learning
  • Academies of Learning are intended to help
students figure out the many courses/paths
available to them at the high school level. Each
    Academy includes
  • a short description

Choosing Courses
  • Consider academic ability when selecting courses
  • Recommendations from Grade 10 Math teachers
  • Due to the important nature of grade 12 courses
    (university consideration) students should limit
the number of grade 12 courses selected in their
    grade 11 year)

Students need to ensure selections meet NS high
School graduation requirements and post-secondary
requirements (program and institution)
strive for excellence
22
Choosing Courses
  • Course changes are very difficult to entertain
once selections have been made due to limited
staffing (staffing is based on the students
selection). Course changes will be accommodated
until late spring, or if students are not
    successful in their studies.
  • Students are choosing courses for the year and
they do not have a choice of the semester in
    which the course falls.
  • Grade 11 students are required to register for 7
    courses.

What Happens Next
Students will be receiving their course selection
booklet during the last 2 weeks of February.
Parents/Guardians should review the guide,
discuss course selection with their son or
daughter, and assist in the completion of the
course selection sheet. It is important to make
decisions that will allow your child to
experience success. Signed sheets must be
returned to the classroom teacher where they
received their booklet. Deadline is Tuesday
March 24th.
strive for excellence
38
What Happens Next
  • During the month of April school counsellors will
assist each student through individual meetings
    - making sure selected courses allow the student
to meet graduation and program requirements. If
changes must occur, sheets will be sent back home
    for the appropriate signature.
  • Counsellors will individually meet all potential
graduates in the fall of their senior year to
review course selection. A parent information
session will also be held at that time to discuss
    post-secondary information, scholarships and
    timing.
