Title: Basic Networking

1
Basic Networking
  • Nicholas Fugett

2
What is networking?
  • Networking is connecting devices together to
commutate with each other, so they can share
    data, files, and computing resources
  • Networking happens all around us to our PCs, to
ATMs, cell phones, and much more
  • We will focus on computer networking in this
    presentation

3
Types of Networks
  • LAN Local Area Network
  • WAN- Wide Area Network

4
Type of Network Topologies
  • Star
  • Mesh

5
Most Common Protocols
  • IP Internet Protocol
  • TCP Transfer Control Protocol

6
What is an IP Address?
  • Its a logical address
  • It can be either static or dynamic
  • Can always be changed
  • IPv4 127.0.0.1
  • IPv6 20010db885a3000000008a2e03707334

7
What is a MAC address?
  • MAC Media Access Control
  • Its a physical address
  • It cant be changed
  • Its physically part of the hardware
  • Example of MAC 00ABFF2F934A

8
First Three Layers of OSI Model
LAYER 3
LAYER 2
LAYER 1
9
Most Common Network Devices
  • Hub (Layer 1)
  • Switch (Layer 2)
  • Router (Layer 3)
  • Wireless Access Point (Layer 2 or 3)

10
Hub
  • Layer 1 Device
  • Just broadcast the same data to all ports

11
Switch
  • Layer 2 Device
  • Sends data based off MAC address to the correct
    device

12
Router
  • Layer 3 Device
  • Sends data based off IP address to the correct
    device

13
Wireless Access Point
  • Layer 2 or 3 device
  • Sends wireless signals for network connection
  • Can function either as a router or a switch

14
Types of Network Cable
  • Most common used today is UTP Ethernet
  • Straight Through - Used to connect different
    layer devices
  • Crossover - Used to connect different layer
    devices

15
Wireless Protocols
  • Protocol A speeds up to 54 Mbps, almost
    obsolete now.
  • Protocol B Speeds up to 11 Mbps, still used
    today.
  • Protocol G 54 Mbps, backwards compatible with
    B, most common used today.
  • Protocol N 248 Mbps, Backwards compatible with
    A ,B , and G, Newest and available.

16
Wireless Security
  • WEP Wired Equivalent Privacy
  • WPA- Wi-Fi Protected Access
  • WPA2- Wi-Fi Protected Access 2
