Widening Horizons
Once students see how Thinking Maps can make
learning easier, they may begin to use them at
home to categorize their collections of CDs or
videogames and other creative ways that are
relevant to their life.
It will certainly help them if you encourage this!

  • This term, your daughter will have used
  • Circle Maps
  • Bubble Maps
  • Double Bubble Maps
  • Flow Maps
  • Tree Maps

So what are they?
Lets find out!

Activity 1 The Circle Map
  • Draw a small circle on your paper with another
    larger circle around as shown below

2. Inside the small circle write foods. 3.
Around the small circle and inside the large
circle write all the foods you like or need to
buy this week.

Activity 2 The Tree Map
  • Take your Circle Map of foods.
  • We are now going to put them into categories e.
    g. dairy, meat, vegetables, bakery items etc
  • You could also under each heading put essential
    and non-essential items.
  • You now have your SHOPPING LIST!

Activity 3 The Flow Map
  • Write down the things you need to do to make a
    cup of tea or think of the jobs that need doing
    before Christmas! (Circle Map).
  • Now put these in order using the flow map.
  • Underneath you can write down any additional
    information that helps you get from one box to
    the next e. g. what to do if there are no teabags
    in the usual cupboard!

Activity 4 The Bubble Map
  • Imagine a place that you have been to on holiday
    and write its name in the centre circle.
  • Now write in the small circles around the centre
    one the things that you liked about this place
    that would make you want to go back.

Activity 5 The Double Bubble Map
  • You could use this to compare the place in your
    Bubble Map with another place you are thinking of
    visiting.
  • Things they have in common go in the linked
    bubbles between them.
  • Things that are different go in the circles on
    the outside.
  • These can help you to make a decision!
