Title: Service Areas

1
Chapter 9
  • Service Areas

2
Objectives
  • Plan the service area of a home by applying good
    design principles.
  • Design a functional kitchen to meet a familys
    needs.
  • Plan an efficient clothes care center.
  • Describe appropriate dimensions for garage space.

3
Kitchens
  • The purpose of a kitchen is food preparation.
  • It may also have extended uses such as
  • Dining
  • Laundry
  • Storage

4
Kitchen Styles
  • These are the six basic kitchen styles
  • Straight Line
  • L-Shaped
  • U-Shaped
  • Corridor
  • Peninsula
  • Island

5
Kitchen Planning
  • Planning of an efficient kitchen involves the
    placement of appliances, adequate storage
    cabinets, and food prep facilities.
  • Keep in mind Work Centers
  • There should be a center for each type of work
    performed in the kitchen
  • Food prep
  • Clean-up
  • Cooking

6
The Work Triangle
  • The work triangle is one of the most important
guidelines to follow when planning a kitchen.
  • What happens if this guideline is broken?
  • To calculate the work triangle, add the distances
    between the following
  • Refrigerator
  • Range (oven)
  • Sink
  • This distance should be between 12 and 22

7
Straight Line Kitchen
  • Used mostly in small houses, cottages, and
    apartments
  • Little space is required for this style
  • Provides a limited amount of cabinet space

8
L-Shaped Kitchen
  • Uses 2 adjacent walls
  • 2 work centers are generally located along one
wall and the 3rd work center is along the
    adjoining wall.
  • This style is usually used when space is limited,
as with the straight line style.

9
L-Shaped Example
10
Corridor Kitchen
  • Is located on two walls opposite each other with
    an aisle down the center.
  • Ideally, the corridor style should be used when
the kitchen is long and narrow.
  • The aisle should be at least 4 wide.

11
Corridor Example
12
U-Shaped Kitchens
  • One of the most popular styles
  • Highly efficient use of space
  • The work triangle is compact and functional.
  • Traffic from other parts of the house do not
    interfere with this kitchen style.

13
U-Shaped Example
14
Peninsula Kitchen
  • Provides ample work space
  • Can easily be joined with an open dining area
the peninsula can be used as an eat-in area
  • The amount of traffic through the kitchen is
reduced due to the effective use of the peninsula.

15
Peninsula Example
16
Island Kitchen
  • This style is usually a modification of any of
    the following
  • Straight Line
  • L-Shaped
  • U-Shaped
  • Island can be used to house a sink or range, or
it can be used as a food prep area.
  • At least 4 of clearance should be allowed around
    all sides of the island.

Cabinets and Appliances
  • Pages 196-201 provide many pictures of cabinets
and appliances that are commonly used.
  • In this class, you will use the 2DSYMBS file to
copy/paste cabinets and appliances into your
    drawings.
  • Our standards
  • Base
  • Cabinet height 34.5
  • Cabinet width 24
  • Upper cabinet
  • Cabinet height 30
  • Cabinet width 12

19
Clothes Care Center
  • Work space and storage are combined to maximize
    efficiency of space.
  • The purpose of a clothes care center is to
  • Wash clothes
  • Dry clothes
  • Press clothes
  • Fold clothes
  • Store clothes
  • Mend clothes

20
Garage Design
  • The primary purpose of a garage is to shelter
    the homeowners vehicles.
  • Size and location of the garage depends on the
number of cars to be housed, the size and layout
of the house, and the available space.
  • A minimum of 5 should be planned on the sides of
the car for a door to be fully opened.

21
Garage Door Design
  • Garage doors
  • A single car garage door should be 8-9 wide and
    7-8 high.
  • 2-car garage doors are usually 16 wide and again
    7-8 high.
