Title: A Study of Denominations

1
A Study of Denominations
  • Roman Catholicism (3)
  • Transubstantiation
  • Purgatory

2
Transubstantiation
transition
of
substance
3
Transubstantiation
  • . . .the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox
doctrine that the bread and wine of Communion
become, in substance but not appearance, the body
and blood of Jesus Christ at consecration
    (Encarta Dictionary)
  • That the consequence of Transubstantiation, as a
conversion of the total substance, is the
transition of the entire substance of the bread
and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ, is
the express doctrine of the Church (Council of
    Trent, Sess. XIII, can. ii)

4
The Council of Trent Transubstantiation
  • a council of uninspired men
  • deemed transubstantiation as doctrine
  • deemed all who taught that Christ was in the
    elements figuratively were condemned

5
Paul and Transubstantiation
  • Paul was an inspired man (Eph. 33-5 2 Pet.
    315, 16)
  • never spoke anything about transubstantiation
  • deemed all who came and taught a different gospel
than what was preached were accursed (Gal. 18,
    9)
  • therefore, the Council of Trent is accursed!

6
Arguments Against
  • unreasonable because it allows a priest to
produce God and prescribe Him in a capsule
(Wallace, Foy, Bulwarks Of Faith, 187)
  • Remained literal elements even after Jesus gave
    thanks for them (Matt. 2626-29)

7
Matthew 2626-29, NKJV
26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread,
blessed and broke it, and gave it to the
disciples and said, "Take, eat this is My
body." 27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks,
and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all
of you. 28 "For this is My blood of the new
covenant, which is shed for many for the
remission of sins. 29 "But I say to you, I will
not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on
until that day when I drink it new with you in My
Fathers kingdom."
8
NOW IF JESUS DIDNT CHANGE THE ELEMENTS IN THE
INSTITUTION OF THE SUPPER, WHY DO SOME THINK THEY
CAN CHANGE IT TODAY?
In a closer logical analysis of
Transubstantiation, we find the first and
fundamental notion to be that of conversion,
which may be defined as the transition of one
thing into another in some aspect of being. As
is immediately evident, conversion (conversio) is
something more than mere change (mutatio).
Whereas in mere changes one of the two extremes
may be expressed negatively, as, e.g., in the
change of day and night, conversion requires two
positive extremes, which are related to each
other as thing to thing. . . e.g., in the
conversion of water into wine at Cana.

9
Arguments Against
  • unreasonable because it allows a priest to
produce God and prescribe Him in a capsule
(Wallace, Foy, Bulwarks Of Faith, 187)
  • remained literal elements even after Jesus gave
    thanks for them (Matt. 2626-29)
  • drinking blood is forbidden (Acts 1529)

10
Arguments Against
  • This is my body This is my blood refers to
    spiritual significance not physical substance.
    Compare. . .
  • I am the bread of life (Jn. 635)
  • I am the light of the world (Jn. 812)
  • I am the door (John 107,9)
  • I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives
His life for the sheep (Jn. 1011)
  • I am the vine (Jn. 155)

11
Arguments Against
  • inconsistent with the concept of a memorial
  • . . .do this in remembrance of Me (Lk. 2219
    cf. 1 Cor. 1124, 25)
  • how can you memorialize something that is always
    present?

12
Arguments Against
  • proclaim the Lords death
  • For as often as you eat this bread and drink
this cup, you proclaim the Lords death till He
    comes (1 Cor. 1126)
  • it is a proclamation of His death, not a
    consumption of His dead body
  • till he comes shows that he is not bodily
    present in the Lords Supper

13
PURGATORY
This Catholic Encyclopedia therefore confesses
that the faith of their Church in Purgatory is
not found in the Scriptures!
  • Purgatory (Lat., purgare, to make clean, to
purify) in accordance with Catholic teaching is a
place or condition of temporal punishment for
those who, departing this life in God's grace,
are, not entirely free from venial faults, or
have not fully paid the satisfaction due to their
transgressions. The faith of the Church
concerning purgatory is clearly expressed in the
Decree of Union drawn up by the Council of
Florence (Mansi, t. XXXI, col. 1031), and in the
decree of the Council of Trent which (Sess. XXV).
    . . (www.newadvent.org)

14
PURGATORY
This Catholic Encyclopedia also confesses the
insufficiency of the Grace of God!
  • Purgatory (Lat., "purgare", to make clean, to
purify) in accordance with Catholic teaching is a
place or condition of temporal punishment for
those who, departing this life in God's grace,
are, not entirely free from venial faults, or
have not fully paid the satisfaction due to their
transgressions. The faith of the Church
concerning purgatory is clearly expressed in the
Decree of Union drawn up by the Council of
Florence (Mansi, t. XXXI, col. 1031), and in the
decree of the Council of Trent which (Sess. XXV).

15
1 Corinthians 620
  • For you were bought at a price therefore
    glorify God in your body
  • were we bought or not?
  • did Jesus pay the full price or not?
  • Purgatory makes Jesus sacrifice insufficient
    for the cost!

16
Are All of Our Sins Forgiven or Not?
  • Ps 852, You have forgiven the iniquity of Your
people You have covered all their sin. Selah
  • Col 212, 13, buried with Him in baptism, in
which you also were raised with Him through faith
in the working of God, who raised Him from the
dead. And you, being dead in your trespasses and
the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made
alive together with Him, having forgiven you all
    trespasses

TO THE SINNER WHO IS BAPTIZED!!!
17
Are All of Our Sins Forgiven or Not?
  • 1Jo 19, If we confess our sins, He is faithful
and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us
    from all unrighteousness.
  • Acts 822 Repent therefore of this your
wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought
of your heart may be forgiven you. For I see that
you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by
    iniquity.

TO THE CHRISTIAN WHO SINS AND REPENTS AND
CONFESSES
18
DYING IN GRACE OR SIN
  • ONE CANNOT DIE IN SIN AND HAVE GRACE
  • John 821, Then Jesus said to them again, "I am
going away, and you will seek Me, and will die in
your sin. Where I go you cannot come.
  • ONE CANNOT DIE IN GRACE AND HAVE SIN
  • Revelation 1413, Then I heard a voice from
heaven saying to me, Write Blessed are the
dead who die in the Lord from now on. Yes,
says the Spirit, that they may rest from their
labors, and their works follow them.

19
Catholic Dogma
"What is purgatory? A place and state of
temporary punishment after death Who goes to
purgatory? Those 1) who die while guilty of
unrepented venial sins 2) who die without having
done sufficient penance to pay the debt of the
temporal punishment still due their past sins
Where do you go when you leave purgatory? To
heaven to be with God Can you help the souls in
purgatory? You can shorten their stay by having
Masses said for them, praying for them and doing
good works for them" (Catechism, pp. 37-39.)
20
Christs Dogma
  • Ps 6212, Also to You, O Lord, belongs mercy
For You render to each one according to his
    work.
  • Jer 1710, I, the LORD, search the heart, I test
the mind, even to give every man according to his
ways, according to the fruit of his doings.
  • Ro 26, who will render to each one according
    to his deeds
  • 2Co 510, For we must all appear before the
judgment seat of Christ, that each one may
receive the things done in the body, according to
what he has done, whether good or bad.
  • (Other Passages 1 Pet. 117 Rev. 223 2012,
    13 etc)

21
Christs Dogma
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His
great love with which He loved us, 5 even when
we were dead in trespasses, made us alive
together with Christ (by grace you have been
saved), 6 and raised us up together, and made us
sit together in the heavenly places in Christ
Jesus, 7 that in the ages to come He might show
the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness
toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you
have been saved through faith, and that not of
yourselves it is the gift of God, 9 not of
works, lest anyone should boast. (Eph. 44-9)
22
No Crossing Contradicts Purgatory
  • no crossing from Torments to Paradise (Lk.
    1624-26)
  • 24 "Then he cried and said, Father Abraham,
have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may
dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my
tongue for I am tormented in this flame. 25
But Abraham said, Son, remember that in your
lifetime you received your good things, and
likewise Lazarus evil things but now he is
comforted and you are tormented. 26 And besides
all this, between us and you there is a great
gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from
here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass
    to us.

23
CATHOLIC
CHRIST
VS
ANOTHERS WORK CAN AFFECT YOUR JUDGMENT
JUDGED ACCORDING TO YOUR WORKS
CAN DIE IN GRACE AND STILL HAVE TO PAY FOR SINS
GRACE IS EXCEEDINGLY RICH
CAN DIE IN GRACE AND STILL SUFFER PUNISHMENT
DIE IN CHRIST, REST

Is The Catholic Church the True Church?
  • any person/church who teaches something as
doctrine other than what has been taught by the
apostles is accursed (Gal. 18, 9)
  • the Catholic Church teaches another gospel (the
office of Pope, priests forbidden to marry,
    segregate priesthood, call priests father,
    assorted false doctrines re Mary,
    Transubstantiation, Purgatory, etc.)
  • therefore the Catholic Church is not the True
    Church
