Welcome to the Courses Homepage
  • Lets take a short tour
  • Youll find that all the undergraduate courses
    have the same look and feel that is on purpose.
    We want you to spend your time learning not
    second guessing where ????? is in this course.

Four Main Icons on Courses Homepage
There are four main icons on the homepage. The
icons may look a little different the colors may
be different, but these 4 icons are consistent
throughout all the undergraduate courses.

The four main icons on the homepage have
corresponding heading with subheading listed in
the course menu on the left. Many student just
use the course menu on the left to navigate
through the course. NOTE If a course does not
use the subheading e.g. student presentations,
then it will not appear in that courses menu.

The same 6 subheadings here are identical to the
subheading in the course menu.

Opening Course Menu
Lets make sure you can see your course menu.
Make sure the green triangle is pointed down.
This opens the course menu. If you want to close
your course menu then click the green triangle so
it is pointed to the right. The time to close
the course menu is when you need a larger screen
to better see what you are working on.

Syllabus
Now, well go down the course menu and briefly
describe each of these tools/subheadings. Syllabus
containing course information, instructor
information, course goals, policies, textbooks,
course requirements and other pertinent
information.

Calendar
Calendar allows instructors to exchange
information about class events quickly and
effectively. Calendar entries may include links
to course content or to external websites,
notification of assignment due dates, room
location for onground classes, etc.

Content Module
Content Module consists of a number of pages of
content such as lecture notes, note taking
guides, reading assignments, charts, tables, etc.
When you first look at a Content Module, youll
see a Table of Contents. The Table of Contents is
divided into headings that contain the pages of
content. These are usually organized into the
sequence in which you are expected to complete
them. This section is sometimes referred to as
the meat and potatoes of the course.

Glossary
Glossary contains any keywords with their
definitions. If your textbook has a glossary
then refer to your book.

Search
Search allows you to conduct a search for text
within the course. Searching is limited to course
content and tools that the instructor adds to
your course.

Compile
Compile allows you to create a custom collection
of content pages from a Content Module, merged
together in one file. After compiling the content
pages, you can view them on screen, save them to
a file on your computer, or print them from your
browser.

Mail
Mail allows you to send, receive, reply, and
forward mail messages to others in the course.
You can also store drafts of mail messages,
search your mail messages, and add mail folders.

Discussions
Discussions allows students and instructors to
send, read, and search for messages. Discussions
is divided into different topics which allow your
instructor to create discussion groups around
particular subjects. Topics can be public or
private. Everyone in your course can access
public topics, while private topics are available
only to the set of students and instructor that
the instructor chooses. All courses have a
Student Lounge for those conversations about
movies, restaurants, carpooling etc. All courses
have a General Course Question for questions
about the course in general that all students
would benefit reading the answer.

Chat
Chat allows students and instructors to have
real-time conversations with others in the
course. There are four general purpose chat rooms
and one general forum for the course. There is
also a general chat room for all courses, which
is a room shared by everybody from all courses on
the same server. Conversations in the four
general purpose rooms are recorded. Only your
instructor can see the records.

Whiteboard
Whiteboard is a drawing tool that you can use
during an online discussion. This tool allows you
to type text, draw objects, insert graphics, and
make modifications especially useful for
drawing and viewing diagrams in real-time. Your
instructor must add Whiteboard to your course
before you can use it.

Student Homepages
Student Homepages allows you to create a
personalized homepage that contains information
about yourself, the projects you are working on,
links to your favorite web sites, and perhaps
personal information you want to share with your
classmates. The Student Homepages screen displays
links to all students registered in the course,
only those students who have created a Homepage
can be viewed.

Student Presentations
Student Presentations enables you, or a group of
students, to create a presentation and upload it
to your WebCT course. You and your group members,
and the instructor, can then see your work.

My Progress
My Progress allows you to see the parts of the
course that you have accessed, and the number of
content module pages visited.

Assignments
Assignments allows students to see what the
assignments are and when they are due. Files may
be attached such as instructions, grading rubric,
photographs, spreadsheet or articles etc. that
students can download. Once the assignment is
completed, students can submit their completed
work, and view their grade after it has been
graded.

Self-test
Self-test are generally multiple-choice tests
that allow you to test your knowledge. When you
answer a question you are told immediately
whether the answer is correct or incorrect. When
you use Self Test, no grades are assigned or
recorded and the instructor cannot see your
results.

My Grades
My Grades allows you to see your grades in the
course. You can see WebCT quiz results,
assignment grades, and even non-WebCT components
of your grade if your instructor adds these to
the WebCT gradebook.

Quiz/Survey
Quiz/Survey allows students to see when the
quizzes and surveys are due. These quizzes and
surveys are taken online, some of which are taken
in a proctored environment. Once the quiz is
completed, students can view their results and
their grades.

My WebCT
Weve briefly covered the course menu, now lets
take a tour of the top menu bar in WebCT. My
WebCT provides you with centralized access to all
of your WebCT courses on the server without
logging out of WebCT and having to log back in.
My WebCT can also contain links to new mail, new
discussion posting, new grades, new calendar
entries, announcements and book.

Resume Course
Resume Course provides a quick method for you to
resume studying content pages where you left off.
When you leave your course after studying your
content pages, you can return to the last content
page read by choosing Resume Course from the Menu
Bar. When you are finished reading all the course
content, Resume Course becomes deactivated.

Course Map
Course Map allows you to view and navigate
through your entire course on one page. The
Course Map link appears on the top Menu Bar
throughout WebCT. Course Map is automatically
updated whenever your instructor makes a change
to the course.

Check Browser
Check Browser checks whether your browser is
validated for use with WebCT in the login screen,
in my WebCT, and in course homepages. However,
you may also want to check if your browser is
non-validated using Check Browser. Check Browser
also gives you access to WebCT's Browser Tune-up
page where there is up-to-date information about
all classifications of browsers. A validated
browser is one that is compatible with WebCT. A
non-validated browser is one that is not fully
tested or has known minor issues with WebCT. An
unsupported browser is one that is incompatible
with WebCT.

Log Out
Log Out takes you out of WebCT. What most
students do is log off the internet and not worry
about logging out.

Help So many times you have questions and need
help. This button is for you. It covers all the
topics of WebCT with step-by-step instructions.
Remember HELP is your friend.

Course Name This is a visual reminder of which
course you are currently in. If you happen to be
in the wrong course, just click my WebCT to go
back to a listing of all your courses.

Cookie Crumbs This is just like Little Red
Riding Hood. If you get lost in a course just
follow the cookie crumbs.
