• Ecology is the study of the responses and
  interactions of living things with their
  environment.
• Organisms must interact with their surroundings
  by responding to the living and non-living parts
  in order to survive.

Ecosystem

• The non-living parts are called abiotic.
• ex water, light, air, temperature,
  rocks, soil, and wind
• Living parts are called biotic.
• ex all living things

Food Chains

• A food chain and food web shows how the energy in
  food is passed from one organism to another in an
  ecosystem.
• A food chain always starts with a producer which
  makes its own food.
• Herbivores eat plants.
• Carnivores eat other animals.

• Decomposers, such as bacteria, break down dead
  plant and animal matter and return nutrients back
  to the ecosystem.
