  • Required the online instructor to be the clinical

  • These students would have not taken this course
    otherwise due to commute.

STUDENTS PERCEPTION
  • All were positive comments about the textbook
    easy to read, informative.
  • Students reported spending 10-25 hours per week
    studying and on the computer.
  • They all would recommend this way of learning
    nursing assistant skills.

  • 4 passed skills test on first attempt
  • 1 passed on second attempt, 1 did not retest
  • 3 are scheduled for the written test
  • 2 have passed the written test 94 88

ONLINE INSTRUCTORS FEEDBACK
  • The most difficult area to control was the
    students in other facilities.
  • Difficult to contact instructors on progress.
  • Instructors did not routinely document completion
    of skill training so the next module would open
    for the student.
  • Instructors did not read emails, some did not use
    the program at all.

CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR ISSUES
  • Instructors in facilities needed to document
    completing skills training before the next module
    would open.

INSTRUCTORS FEEDBACK
  • Reading assignments, workbook assignments, and
    the design of the modules seem to be effective
    and promotes learning.
  • The course calendar is easy for the students to
    follow.
  • E-mails and corresponding with students is
    efficient.

SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT
  • More buy in from facility instructors.
  • More training in using WebCT for instructors.
  • More access to computers and online class.
  • More time off the floor so they can focus on
    training the students adequately.
  • More on-site visits to provide encouragement.

CURRENT CLASS
  • More difficult to communicate with students as
    all communication is on-line.
  • More difficult to communicate with facility
    instructors although they are using the WebCT
    course more than the first class. Many phone
    calls are made to verify progress in the class.

  • TABE testing on first night showed reading level
    higher than first group 10.5
  • No skills instruction by online instructor,
    students had to be affiliated with an approved
    facility.

COSTS FOR USING ONLINE COURSE
  • 25.00 per student fee
  • Costs include
  • Training for online instructor
  • Training for clinical site instructors
  • This could be done by video-conferencing to
    decrease travel.
  • Tech help for students
  • Costs to decrease as enrollment increases. There
    will be a capped fee.
