The concept - starting out very general
At the turn of the millennium, information is
being generated at an exponential rate. An
increasing part of this information flood is
acces-sible via the internet.
However, users of major internet search engines
are often confronted with the problem that search
results are rather unstructured and 'amorphous'.

The Concept
Built on the electronic cataloguing system CDS,
the "Directory of Information Resources" (DIR)
presents a structured approach. The DIR is a
catalogue of well selected and sorted
environmental information resources that have
been used and produced in the context of the
reporting process on the state of Europe's
environment. The philosophy of cataloguing
information together with supplying the necessary
tools to accomplish this idea are the basis for
working on the harmonisation of how environmental
information is recorded and made accessible in
the future.

EIONET - The Network
EIONET is the main vehicle of the European
Environment Agency to collect data, information
and knowledge for the process of reporting on the
state of environment. The core network connects
more than 500 institutions in the 18 EEA member
countries.
Each country operates a co-ordinating institute
(National Focal Point - NFP) and nine expertise
centres (National Reference Centres - NRCs).

The CDS Cataloguing Concept
CDS was implemented in order to collect, manage
and disseminate detailed description of
information sources. The cataloguing system is
accessible by the retrieval and update tool
WinCDS and via the web-based database browser
WebCDS. Both applications are connected to the
General Multilingual Environmental Thesaurus
(GEMET) which provides indexing and search
functions. CDS is based on the Global
Environmental Information Locator System (GELOS).
