4Why a Driver Education Course?
Consider 100 Teenage Drivers
- 37 will be ticketed for speeding.
- 4 will be arrested for driving under the
influence of alcohol or other drugs. - 28 will be involved in a collision where there
will be vehicle damage.
- 13 will be injured in automobile collisions.
- 1 will be killed in an automobile collision.
- 17 will not fall under the above categories.

- The primary factors contributing to teen crashes
in Hawaii were - Failure to yield, 35

factors for all other drivers in Hawaii.

10What is required of your teen?
11Teen Provisional Driver License Requirements in
Hawaii
- Permit Exam, 15 ½
- DE Course, 30 hours with a certified instructor
- 6 hours BTW with a certified instructor
- 50 hours drive time (10 at night) with someone
over 21 that has a current driver license - Road Test Qualifications Certificates of
completion, 16 years old, permit for 180 days
12To Obtain a DE Classroom Certificate
- Successfully complete all 10 sessions in any
order. - Tardiness If the door is locked when your teen
arrives to class, they will not be allowed to
attend that session. They will need to make-up
the missed session. The door is locked when the
instructor starts the presentation. - A minimum score of 70 on every test
- Completion of the DUI project.
- Participate in group activities.
13To Obtain a BTW Certificate
- Successfully complete all 6-hours of BTW
lessons. - Submit to the BTW instructor the notarized
driving log affidavit.
14Behind The Wheel Lessons
- The State of Hawai'i requires a driver education
program to be conducted in no less than 6 weeks.
- If you are going to schedule BTW lessons through
another driving school, please notify the
Classroom instructor. - BTW lessons through Accurate Driving will start
sometime after completing sessions 3 4.
15Learners Permit
- Requirements
- Written Test, 30 questions, maximum 6 wrong,
based on the Hawai'i Drivers Manual - Both Parents Signatures
- Certified Birth Certificate
- Original Social Security Card
16Driving With A Learners Permit
- Requirements
- Must be accompanied by someone 21 years old with
a license in the same category as the permit,
seated in a passenger seat beside the permit
holder. - Between the hours of 1100 p.m. and 500 a.m.
the licensed driver must be a parent or guardian
with a license in the same category as the
permit. - All occupants must wear a seatbelt or child
passenger safety restraint.
17Requirements For A Road Test
- Requirements
- Both certificates of completion of a certified
driver education course. - Have had a permit for at least 180 days.
- Accompanied by a licensed driver.

- All occupants must wear a seatbelt or child
passenger safety restraint. - Cannot transport more than one person under the
age of eighteen who is not from the same
household unless accompanied by a licensed driver
who is the teens parent or guardian - Between the hours of 1100 p.m. and 500 a.m. the
licensed driver must be a parent or guardian with
a license in the same category as the teens
license, except when

available. The teen needs to have a signed

the teens school, if no other transportation is
available. The teen needs to have a signed
statement from a parent or guardian containing - Parents or Guardians name

- Verifying driving is necessary to travel to the
school-authorized activity
24Violating Provisional License Rules
- First Offense
- Suspension of license for
- Three months, or
- Until the teen is 18 years old, whichever occurs
sooner - Second Offense
- Revocation of license for
- Six months, or
- Until the teen is 18 years old, whichever occurs
sooner
25Penalties for Conviction of a Traffic Offense
- First Offense
- Suspension or revocation of license for
- Six months, or
- Until the teen is 18 years old, whichever occurs
sooner - Second Offense
- Revocation of license for
- 12 months, or
- Until the teen is 18 years old, whichever occurs

26A Regular License will be issued when
- The holder of the provisional license
- Has held the provisional license for at least
six months - Has no pending proceeding that might result in
the suspension or revocation of the
provisional license - Is at least 17 years old
- If the license is not suspended or revoked it
will expire on the licensees nineteenth birthday.
27Are You Going to Move out of Hawaii?
- If you plan to move to another state be sure to
call that states DMV for regulations regarding
Juvenile Drivers Licenses
28When do you notify your insurance company?
- From the Fall 2003 issue of GEICO DIRECT
- Insuring Your Teen Driver. When should you add
them to your policy? - Once teens get their learner's permit, they must
be added to your auto insurance policy. This is
to protect you from any possible liabilities in
the event your teen has an accident while driving
- even while supervised by an adult.
