Mrs. Martinez rambled on about what she thought
was an extremely insightful and interesting
lesson.
What should I do with my ecosystem I am making at
home?
Now class, we see how fascinating space
technology can be. I bet you are so excited to
go home and with your group find a technological
creation that interests you. Be prepared
tomorrow to present all the intriguing facts you
have found to the class.
Four score and seven years ago..
I love space technology!

Tom, Julie, and Benny reluctantly sat at Bennys
computer searching aimlessly for a space
technology. Tom, still thinking about pizza,
goes to Dominos to get some, leaving the rest of
his group to finish the assignment. Meanwhile,
Benny and Julie run across a strange website
about a little car on Mars. Slightly interested
the two students read a little more about it.
Suddenly, ZIP ZAP BOOM they are gone.
Tom comes in munching on a slice of pizza.
Hey youf guyz wherf you go?

KERPLUNK! Benny and Julie are dropped out of
nowhere next to Spirit, the Mars Land Rover.
While investigating the strange environment with
the extra-strange little car... A crash, sizzle,
and pop came from underneath the rover. Both
stooped to look underneath.

Poor little Hammy, Toms hamster, had a puff of
smoke coming off his head.
Hammy what happened to youwait, why are you
here? Benny exclaimed, not expecting an answer.
I sthowed away in your stheat pocket and all of
a sthudden got hungry and ate sthomething, but it
sthure did sthock me, Hammy studdered, lisping
slightly
Tom and Julie looked at each other, stunned, then
the reality of this whole catastrophe hits them
and they just start giggling.

So Hammy, do you know what this contraption is?
Julie asks the hamster.
Why yeth! Thith ith what we call Spirit. It
ith the Marths Land Rover. Sthent up here by
NASthA in January 2004 to explore the planet
Mars, and sthee if there ith water. It has
stholar panelth that give it the energy it needs
to move, when it has the energy it ith controlled
by three satelliteth which can sthee where it
goes and what it does.

What does it do Hammy? Julie, all of a sudden
intrigued by this technology.
Well you sthee, it has six wheelths, NASthA is
able to turn off five of those wheelths, leaving
one sthpinning. Thith allows them to collect
samples of the dirt.
Benny, now interested also butts in, How does it
collect the samples?
The wheel left sthpinning digs into the Mars
soil and retrieves the sample and is able to
sthend the information back to NASthA through the
satellites.

Where are the satellites? By now both Julie
and Benny are engrossed in this funny little
thing.
Well there are three sthrategically plathed
evenly around the world. One in Austhtralia, one
in Sthpain, and the lastht one in California.
CALIFORNIA, TOM, OH NO! Benny and Julie just
realized their friend had been left behind.

Benny speaks up, Hammy can we communicate with
Tom through the rover?
I dont sthee why not.

Benny and Julie, after multiple tries, find out
how the computers and satellite communication
work (with Hammys help) and they get through to
Tom back home. Tom is furious that he was left
behind. But then they persuade him to use the
computer like a big remote control car, and drive
them around Mars to find the water the scientists
are looking for.

After a few minutes of driving around the Rover
sputters and dies. Hammy tries to console the
three students.
It was only expected to latht a few months
anyway. Now how to get back home.

WHOOSH! A gigantic burst of wind blew sand and
dirt into Benny and Juiles eyes. They jump off
of the rover and start to run from the storm when
they hear a sputter. They turn around and notice
that the wind had cleaned the solar panels off,
and the rover regained its energy and was able to
run again. They jump on it again and Tom drives
them away from the storm. (Actual footage of wind
storm on Mars.)

SMACK!

SLUURRRP! Benny, Julie, and Hammy were sucked
back into the computer and spit back out in
Bennys computer room.

We did it! We found a form of water on Mars
The group cheered.

Welcome back class!
Today Present what you have learned about space
technology!
The next day in class each member of the group
told of their experiences, adventures, and
appreciation of the Mars land rover, Spirit.
