THEINTERNET
18
The 5 main uses or sections of the Internet are
  • Email
  • Browsing or surfing ( WEB sites )
  • Chatting or IM
  • Forums
  • Sharing personal items ( photos, videos ect )

19
E MAIL( electronic mail )
20
Emailis verysimilarto thepostalmail
21
In real life,
In the virtual world of the Internet,
The sender writes his letter or text
puts the receivers address brings the
envelope in the Postal box The postal service
( US Post ) sends the letter to the
receiver mail box Located in front of his
door The receiver gets the letter opens the
envelope reads the text
  • The sender
  • Writes his letter or text
  • Puts the receivers address
  • Sends it to the Post office ( most systems)
  • For Hotmail, small difference
  • Sender goes to Hotmail and then,
  • Write its letter or text
  • The postal service ( Hotmail or other systems )
  • sends the letter to
  • the receiver mail box
  • Located at the receivers I.S.P.
  • The receiver
  • gets the letter
  • opens the envelope
  • reads the text

22
Theres many different ways, outfits or programs
you can use for Email, just among my contacts in
the park
  • Yahoo.com, Comcast.com, Strato.net
  • Aol.com, Persona,ca, hotmail.com
  • Webtv.net, Execpc.com, Machlink.com
  • Windstream.net, Chiolink,net, Woh.rr.com
  • Embarqumail.com, Juno.com, Embarq,com,

23
AS AN EXAMPLE,HERES THE ONE I USE( and the
only one I know !! )HOTMAIL
  • MOST PROBABLY, YOU EMAIL PROGRAM OR INTERNET
PROVIDER OFFER THE SAME BASIC FUNCTIONS

24
Using todays class as a guideline, youll have
to explore the Email system that youre using to
find its caracteristics. If you need
clarification on your system, try the HELP on
it. You can also ask the technical support or
consult the FORUMS on the Internet. By GOOGLING,
forum aol.net Email for instance, you might be
surprised as what information youll find
there.
25
Today, the main reason for using a web-based
system, such as Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail and others
is that you DO NOT HAVE TO CHANGE
your Email address when you switch from one
Internet provider to another. These days, people
change ISP constantl ( for traveling reasons or
insatisfation )and they have to notify all their
contacts ( family, friends or business )of
their Email address change.
26
Hotmail recognises me As I log in
It shows how many unread Emails are in my
INBOX and in my JUNK BOX
27
Because I use the Free version of Hotmail, I
get commercials
Each Email shows the sender, the subject Of the
message and the date and time it was received
On opening INBOX, A list of read and Unread
Emails appears
28
  • My options
  • Reply
  • Forward
  • Delete
  • Junk
  • Mark as
  • Or
  • Move to
  • ( save )

29
TO REPLY
To reply,Click REPLY,WriteYour
answerHereYou do notHave to leaveThe
originalMessage. You can select itAnd delete it
Notice that The senders Address Is
already Entered in The TO box And The subject Is
automatically Entered also
30
TO FORWARD
To forward The message To someone else Press
FORWARD And enter the Address the TO box You
can also add Some text here
31
  • If you want to forward
  • To more than one person,
  • Press the
  • SHOW CC BCC box
  • ( CC ) Carbon Copy
  • ( BCC ) Blank carbon copy

32
Input the addresses In either CC or BCC box NOTE
Everyone will see The addresses in the CC box But
WILL NOT see those Addresses in the BCC box
33
IMPORTANT NOTE
  • IN THE REAL WORLD, WHEN YOU RECEIVE A LETTER
  • FROM YOUR BANK, AS AN EXAMPLE, IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN
SENT TO THOUSANDS OF CUSTOMERS, BUT YOU ONLY SEE
    YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS
  • AT THE BEGINNING OF THE LETTER.
  • YOU WOULDNT WANT TO SEE ALL THE OTHER NAMES AND
ADDRESSES AND YOU CERTAINLY WOULDNT WANT
    EVERYBODY TO SEE
  • YOUR NAME AND YOUR ADDRESS.
  • THATS WHAT WE CALL CONFIDENTIALITY

34
IMPORTANT NOTE
WHY SHOULD IT BE DIFFERENT ON THE
INTERNET CURIOUSLY, WE GET LARGE NUMBERS OF
EMAILS ADDRESSED TO TENS OF POEPLE, IF NOT
MORE YOUR RELATIVES AND / OR FRIENDS DO IT TO
YOU DAY IN DAY OUT AND YOU PROBABLY DO IT
TOO, WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT IT ALL THE FUSS THAT
EVERYBODY MAKES CONCERNING CONFIDENTIALITY IS
COMPLETLY FORGOTTEN WHEN IT COMES TO WRITE EMAILS
TO OUR CLOSE CONTACTS WHY ?
35
Heres an example of an Email That has been sent
and sent and sent Again and I can see all the
Email Addresses of the people to which this
message has been sent to, most of whom I dont
even know and yet, if I REPLY TO ALL or FORWARD (
which Email programs permit ) All of those people
will receive it. I can now start sending Emails
to a Bunch of people just because every Recipient
along the chain did not Bother to remove all
those addresses And we claim loudly That we want
confidentiality Strange, isnt ?
36
  • These are useless Emails and, eventually, they
    join what is called SPAMMING
  • Research show that some 80 to 85 of all the
email in the world are either useless or spam.
  • An industry of Email addresses harvesting is
dedicated to collecting email addresses and
    selling compiled databases
  • Think about it
  • And heres how you can do your share to improve
    these impressive statistics.

37
When you get an Email Like this and if you
want To share it with some of Your
contacts, Click FORWARD
38
First, highlight ( select ) all The
addresses From this point on right to the end And
delete them This way, your targeted contacts Will
not see all those Hundred Email addresses
39
You do not have to enter An address in the TO
box Or you can put yours in there. Put all of
your targeted Contacts in the BCC box They will
all get your Message but will Not see everybody
elses Email address Then, press SEND
40
TO SAVE EMAILS
I can save an Email by move to to a folder That
I would have created Previously. As you can see,
I created Numerous folders that pretty Well help
me save my Emails In a logical form.
41
To create folders, Click on Manage
Folders, New, Give the new folder a name And save
it
42
  • Attached files
  • Can be any format
  • From photos
  • To videos
  • To powerpoint

look at them, Or look at them right away Or save
them

INBOXAND WHAT GOES INTO YOUR JUNK BOX

  • Then choose the options that you want

45
You can block Emails from certains addresses or
domains ( the caracters after the _at_ ). First, I

its information When youre done Click SAVE
51
acm
You can search your contacts list By entering a
few caracters here Hotmail will find and list
the Contacts that match or contain Those caracters
52
CATEGORIESORGROUP OF CONTACTS
53
  • Creating categories or groups of contacts is very
useful if you often send Emails to the same
    people.
  • Your immediate family for exemple, or your close
friends, or your checkers club members
  • With categories, instead of having to enter the
addresses of everybody one by one, you ask your
Email system to send that message to all the
members of your family at once

54
To create Edit Or Delete Categories Click MANAGE
CATEGORIES
55
From this page, Categories can be Created, Edited
Or deleted In this example, You see the
categories That Ive already created And the
number of people Each category contains
56
Creating a new category Is as simple as Entering
a name In the NAME box And Click SAVE
57
Adding contacts to a category Is done by
selecting all The contacts you want And Either Cli
ck on CATEGORIES On top of the page Or Drag them
to the Desired category on the left
58
  • Please note that any of your contacts can be
added to any number of categories.
  • For instance, a good friend of yours can be part
    of the FRIENDS category and
  • Also part of the Checker club category
  • And part of the park residents category

59
THE FINALBENEFIT OFCATEGORIES THE FAST AND
EASYMETHOD OF SENDINGEMAILS TO A GROUPOF PEOPLE
60
EXAMPLE
  • Every week, I send Emails to all of you
  • I write my text once and then, tell Hotmail
  • To send it to the L A Computer Group members
  • And because all addresses are put in the BCC box,
  • you all get the Email without seeing the
addresses of the other 70 peoples who get it.
  • FAST AND EFFICIENT !!

61
In The Next Few Weeks,Well Look At
  • Surfing the Internet
  • Different aspects of Music on your computer
