Date and Place of Birth/The Early Years

• Jaques Cartier was born in St. Malo France in
  1491
• Historians know little about his family
• Most likely intrigued by stories from sailors
• Encouraged by Giovanni Verrazano to explore
• Visited Cape Bonavista along the Coast of
  Newfoundland
• Discovered L Isle des Oiseaux (Isle of birds
  now known as Funk Island)
• Died Sept. 1557 at age 66

Contributions/Achievements

• Jaques led first European expedition to St.
  Lawrence area of Canada.
• King of France sent Jaques to North America to
  find a passage to China beginning of July 1541.
• Later in July of 1541 he landed at Moscow point
  changed the name Chaleur Bay (Warm Bay).
• Cartier and his men encountered another group of
  Indians whom historians believed were Stadaconas.
  
• He proved that Newfoundland was an island
• Cartier made three voyages to the St. Lawrence
  region among all records by the first documents
  exploration in North America

• Stadacona and Huron Indians became hostiles
