car rather than fumbling for them on your front
steps.

- When youre away from home, park under street
lights or in a well lit parking lot. - Dont leave packages and other valuables in plain

facts to police.

- Avoid guest facilities with inadequate security
measures or that are located in high-crime areas.
- Be very careful not to venture into unfamiliar
and isolated areas -- by foot or by car --
especially alone or after dark. - If you must drive to an unfamiliar area, call
your destination first and get explicit
directions. - Try not to arrive at bus or train stations too
far ahead of schedule. Standing around waiting
makes you an easy target for assailants.

- Keep purses, wallets, packages and other
valuables hidden away in the glove compartment,
under the seat or in the trunk. - Always keep your car doors locked.
- Keep your windows up. If you must ventilate your
car, open your window just enough to let some air
in -- but not enough for someone to fit a hand,
arm or weapon in. - Other?

- Stay in your car, with your windows closed and
your doors locked. - Turn on your emergency flashers.

- If someone offers to help, roll down your window
just a crack and ask the person to call the
police or a service station. - Dont take someone up on an offer to try to fix
your car.

- Be on guard around alcoves, shrubbery and
doorways. - Use well-lighted entrances and exits.
- Move quickly.
- Stay with another person or a group, if possible.

crime victim when youre on the street? Answer
- Dont look like a crime victim.
- Hold your head up and walk with a purposeful
stride. - Look as though you know where youre going.
- Be aware of the people around you and what they
are doing. - Try not to walk alone its best to use the buddy
system. - Walk in the middle of the sidewalk, stay away
from doorways, avoid walking near parked cars,
stay on well traveled/lighted streets. - Dont flaunt valuables, keep pocketbooks/valuables
strapped across your body, clutched to your side
or hidden under your coat.

- Stay Calm -- avoid appearing angry, upset or
frightened. - Remember Protecting your property is not worth
losing your life. - Hand over whatever the thief wants many thieves
will leave you alone once youve given them what
they want.

- Look behind you. This lets the other person know
that youre aware youre being followed, and
he/she may decide to leave you alone. - Dont stop and try to confront the person.
- Go to the nearest lighted house or open business.
Then call a friend, a cab, or the police.
