The 9,200-square foot Cleanroom in Building 13-0
went from design to build to tool hook-up to
move-in and operational status in about 15
months. It includes approximately 1600 sf of
mechanical and electrical support space 2200 sf
of office, bulk utilities, prep area, washroom,
and storage space and 5400 sf of cleanroom area.

6Execution
Work started with asbestos abatement and
demolition by in-house crews in April 2001. The
conceptual design and rough order of magnitude
cost was completed in early May, followed by
preliminary drawing for review by staff in early
July. By mid-July drawings were submitted for
permitting, and construction was under way by
mid-August. The installation of quick response
sprinkler heads followed the establishment of
Protocol Level 2 and perimeter sealing in early
January. The intake airway was completed in early
February following establishment of Protocol
Level 3 and perimeter sealing. Process piping
analytical testing was completed by the last week
of February and the City of Columbus conducted
its final inspection on March 18. Final
occupancy permit was received on May 24 and staff
began move-in on June 26. The Cleanroom was
operational the following week, with final tool
hook-up completed before mid-August.
Miscellaneous concerns extended into late
December.

10Lessons learned
- DI water
- Process cooling loop
- FM approved FRP ductwork
- Orbital welded stainless steel process piping
- Estimated energy costs vs. actual
- Vacuum system static issue w/hose and connection
ports - Light Levels lamp type, amber lens/sleeves
- Return air grille filter frames
- Tool drops vs. Standards/Sticks Racking vs.
Bulk-Heading vs. Final Tool Hook-up - Multiple issues with CM and their subs from out
of state - Neutralization System Current new issue
11Bldg 13-0 Cleanroom Project
- Battelle Facilities contracted with Hodess
Building Company for a turn-key Design-Build.
Hodess contracted with Vanderweil Engineers,
Inc., BHDP Architecture, and AdvanceTEC, LLC. - Tom Sens with BHDP was Battelles preferred
architectural consultant on site
(1-513-271-1634). - Declan O'Riordan was our primary contact at
Vanderweil Engineers, Inc. (1-617-423-7423) and
is very knowledgeable with regard to the
engineering disciplines. - The real expert regarding Cleanrooms is Tim
Loughran with AdvanceTEC, LLC (1-804-378-1550).
If planning on building a Cleanroom, Tim should
be the first person contacted.
