TIPHONTELECOMMUNICATIONS AND INTERNET PROTOCOL
HARMONIZATION OVER NETWORKS
An overview
2
ETSI Project TIPHON
  • Telecommunications and Internet Protocol
    Harmonization Over Networks
  • The objective of this project is to support a
market for voice communication and related
multimedia aspects between users in IP based
networks and users in switched circuit network
(SCN), as well as between users in an SCN using
IP based networks for connection/trunking between
involved SCN, by the production of appropriate
    ETSI deliverables.

A new paradigm
  • Old paradigms
  • Circuit switching
  • Packet routing
  • New paradigm (TIPHON)
  • Service provision
  • Network technology independence

6
Standards activity
  • VoIP - for commercial application
  • Harmonisation of VoIP with VoSCN
  • Order from Chaos

7
Areas of activity
8
Service, not technology
  • Achieves homogeneity from heterogeneity
  • Abstract design process
  • Scaleable in concept
  • Can be restricted in implementation

9
Why standardisation?
  • Service providers want to be able to use products
from different manufacturers in their networks.
  • Manufacturers want to specialise on specific
    products (e.g. gateways, gatekeeper, clients,
    etherphones, ...)
  • Standards are necessary for the interworking
    between administrative domains.
  • Centralized and global services are necessary
    (clearing houses, certification authorities, the
    global Internet-Telephony directory service, ...)

10
Standards
  • TIPHON
  • aims to achieve interoperability using existing
    standards from open standards bodies
  • harnesses the capabilities and momentum of other
    open standards bodies
  • may develop new specifications if nothing
currently exists to meet a requirement

11
Developing TIPHON
  • Standards engineering principle
  • Step 1 Requirements
  • Step 2 Data and functional element
    identification
  • Step 3 Protocol selection (or design)
  • Formal and semi-formal analysis
  • Use of SDL and UML with ASN.1

12
TIPHON product set
  • Terminal equipment
  • LAN phone, Etherphone, PC-phone
  • Network termination
  • Customer site or server site located
  • Connection controller
  • router control, switch matrix control
  • Access controller
  • Registration, authorisation, authentication

ETSI Bake - off
  • A "bake-off" relates to a "baking contest,
especially among amateur cooks, in which entries
must be prepared and baked within a stipulated
    time".
  • In the engineering world, bake-offs refer to
events where engineers get together to test their
    implementations against each other.

UPCOMING EVENTS IPv6 Bake-off, 2-6 October.
(This week) VoIP Test Event on Speech Quality
starting 23 October. (TIPHON)
14
Past ETSI Bake - off
  • ETSI, IMTC, Microsoft, Intel and Tenovis,
supported by France Telecom, held the IMTC
SuperOp! and TAPI Bake-off from 8 to 15 July 2000
in Nice, France. Approximately 100 manufacturers
of multimedia conferencing and telephony products
were able to perform technical tests to evaluate
the interoperability of their current and future
    products.
  • This event showed that the initial teething pains
of the products tested were definitely over and
that the manufacturers involved are well on their
way to attaining a higher level of quality in the
    near future.
  • The next VoIP test event on Speech Quality that
will take place staring on the 23rd October at
the ETSI premises will surely interest the same
    manufactures.

The result
  • Open and independent
  • To protocols
  • To networks
  • To technology
  • Homogeneous
  • From heterogeneous
