  • Introduction to Solid Edge AssemblyAssembly is
    the environment used to put parts together using
    pre-determined relationships. If parts are not
    dimensionally correct, problems will occur when
    constraining them in Assembly.
  • Assembly files .asm extension - A .cfg file is
    created automatically.- Do not delete the .cfg.
    It contains display configuration information.
  • Some examples of assemblies.

    A helix is translated along an axis, by its pitch
    (the distance between two turns). Both

    It is used to control the shape of a surface.

  • SE Project 20 DISTINCT PARTS!!!- Late Design
    Proposals - Project grades.- Always design in
    full scale - Unit change.- Open SE only once.
    Keep assembly open and use Edit to change
    parts.- Flash Fit/Interference Report (Help).
  • Homework 5- If finished, open the Draft and the
    Assembly file and come to see me in office for
    grading.- All parts should be correctly
    assembled and fully constrained.

Solid Edge Design Project Presentation1. Final
report, drawing and interference report must be
ready before presentation.2. Copy the entire
project folder from your flash drive to the
folder with your last name in the instructors
computer. Remove your flash drive.3. Open the
assembly. Should be saved with all parts showing
and in a good orientation.4. Follow the script
on the left side window.5. Be prepared to show
required features and answer questions about the
project, parts, etc.6- You have about six

  • MAE 110 Midterm - 10/25/06
  • Create a folder called midterm_LastName. All
    midterm files must be created in this folder.
  • Put your flash drive on top of the computer, no
    flash drives are to be used or connected at all.
  • There should be no saving of any files in a
    different folder anywhere.
  • Be prepared to leave the room when asked to.

  • Introduction to NX 3- High end product for
    Mechanical Applications, 3D modeler, analysis and
    manufacturing (CAD/CAE/CAM).- We will follow
    handout tutorials and CAST to learn NX.- In
    general students in this course learn NX faster
    than Solid Edge because once you learn a CAD
    system, it gets much easier the next time around,
    and by now you know SE pretty well.

  • CAST- The CAST library is the little graduation
    cap on the right hand side of the screen. - Its
    going to be the main interface with the
    tutorials.- Click the little pin button at the
    top to keep it open. - It can be resized.
  • Toolbars- Similar to Solid Edge but more
    abundant.- Turn off by right-clicking any gray
    area around them.- Turn off ones we do not
    need, such as Analysis.- Edgebar (SE)
    Resource bar (NX)

  • New File Creation- Similar to SE- Define name
    AND UNITS!!!
  • Dynamic Rotation with the Mouse- Click and hold
    the mouse wheel and move it - at the bottom or
    top of the screen will allow for VERTICAL
    AXIS rotations. - at the right or left of the
    screen will allow for HORIZONTAL AXIS
    rotations. - near the center of the screen will
    allow for MULTI-AXIS rotations.
  • Panning with the Mouse- Click and hold the mouse
    wheel and the right mouse button. Move it around
    to move the view.

  • Shortcut menus- Clicking the right mouse button
    on the window will bring up a menu containing
    many shortcuts that varywith the environment you
    are in. - Clicking and holding theright mouse
    button on thewindow will bring up a menu with
    some view operations shortcuts.
  • Selecting Features- Open the features part
    from C\Program Files\UGS\NX 3.0\ugcast\parts\ess
    entials- Pass the mouse cursor over a feature.
    It will highlight in purple. Left-click to
    select, SHIFT-left-click to deselect. You may
    also hit ESC to deselect everything.

  • - A similar function to QuickPick exists but it
    is accessed with the left mouse button, not RMB
    as in Solid Edge.
  • Applications- NX uses the concept of
    Applications to switch environments. You do not
    necessarily need to create a separate file for a
    drawing, you switch to the Drafting environment
    and the drawing resides in the same file as the
    part. - The Application toolbar is used for
    switching between environments.
  • Modeling (Part)- Right-click to edit feature
    parameters.- Add icons to Utility toolbar
    byclicking on the small black triangle next to
    the X button.

  • Modeling Parts from Sketches- Open the
    nut_bolt1 part from C\Program Files\UGS\NX
    3.0\ugcast\parts\essentials- Change to Modeling
    application or no toolbars will be available.-
    We will draw sketches and then Extrude most of
    the time.- Select the Extrude command.- Set the
    Select Intent to ALL CURVES. The toolbar is
    located where the SE Smartstep was.- Select the
    sketch. A floating menu appears to define which
    type of Extrude. (diff. from SE). - Choose
    Revolved, give it a name (optional) and pick the
    axis of revolution.- Two separate bodies are
    created.- Use the Boolean command to Intersect
    the two bodies and get the desired result.
