Title: Lab Equipment

1
Lab Equipment
2
Beaker
  • similar to a measuring cup with a lip to pour
  • multi-purpose
  • NOT very accurate for measuring volume

NO! Not THAT beaker!
THIS beaker!
3
Graduated Cylinder
  • measures volume MOST accurately
  • has marks etched on the glass called calibration
    marks
  • has a lip for pouring and a plastic bumper to
    prevent breakage

4
Erlenmeyer Flask
  • Used for mixing and heating solids and/or liquids
that might splatter if stirred or heated

5
Thermometer
  • measures temperature
  • unit used for temperature in chemistry is oC

6
Test Tubes and Test Tube Rack
  • Test tubes are used to hold and mix small amounts
    of chemicals
  • Test tube racks are for holding more than one
    test tube

7
Hot Plate
  • used to heat objects or containers without an
    open flame
  • use the lowest temperature setting possible when
    heating

8
Electronic Balance
  • measures mass
  • chemicals should NEVER be directly placed on
    balance pan
  • some are more precise than others

9
Bunsen Burner
  • used for heating substances with an open flame
    using gas

10
Safety Goggles
  • proper eye protection
  • must be worn at all times especially when using
    glassware, chemicals, and/or heat
  • Where are the goggles in this room

11
Test Tube Clamp
  • used to handle hot test tubes

12
Beaker Tongs
  • used to move beakers containing hot liquids

13
Test Tube Brushes
used to clean test tubes and other glassware
14
Ring Ring Stand
  • Rings connect to a ring stand to provide a
stable, elevated platform and hold containers off
    of the counter

15
Pipette
  • used to suck up small amounts of liquids and
    transfer them to another container
  • similar to a medicine dropper

16
Watch Glass
  • a round, concave piece of glass used to cover
beakers when boiling liquids (like a lid)

17
Wash Bottle
  • a plastic, squeezable container that holds water
    to rinse glassware

18
Funnel
  • used to pour liquids or powders into a container
    neatly

What pieces of equipment are shown here?
19
Well Plate
  • rectangular and plastic with holes used to
observe chemical reactions on a small scale

20
Stirring Rod
  • a thin rod of glass used for stirring
  • also used to slowly pour acids into water

21
Striker
  • Has flint which creates a spark to ignite an open
flame like in a Bunsen burner

22
Eyewash
  • used to flush the eyes with water in case of
    contamination by hazardous chemicals
  • flush eyes for at least 15-20 minutes
  • Where is the eyewash?

23
Safety Shower
  • used to flush the body with water in case of
contamination by hazardous chemicals or in case
    of clothing being on fire
  • Where is the safety shower?

24
Where is . . .
  • the fire extinguisher?
  • the first aid kit?
  • the fire blanket?
