• What is ToBI?
• ToBI is a framework for developing
  community-wide conventions for transcribing the
  intonation and prosodic structure of spoken
  phrases in a language variety. A ToBI framework
  system for a language variety is based on careful
  research on the intonation system and the
  relationship between intonation and the prosodic
  structures of the language

• ToBI is not an International Phonetic Alphabet
  for prosody. Because intonation and prosodic
  organization differ  from language to language,
  and often from dialect to dialect within a
  language, there are many different ToBI systems,
  each one specific to a language variety and the
  community of researchers working on that language
  variety.

• Ralf Benzmüller and Martine Grice of University
  of the Saarland, Saarbrücken, Matthias Reyelt of
  TU Braunschweig, Jörg Mayer of Stuttgart
  University and Anton Batliner of Munich
  University have developed a consensus
  transcription system for German Intonation called
  GToBI. GToBI is already adequate for large scale
  database annotation with labellers of different
  expertise at different sites.

• GToBI is a system for transcribing German
  intonation. The relation of this tonal tier to
  the spoken text (text tier) is expressed relative
  to pitch movements in the neighbourhood of
  accented syllables and two kinds of boundaries
  minor boundaries at the edges of intermediate
  phrases and major boundaries at intonation phrase
  edges. These relations are indicated by the
  following diacritics
• tone on accented syllable
• tone next to accented syllable
• - intermediate phrase boundary tone
• intonation phrase boundary tone

• All tonal targets must be related to either an
  accent or the edge of a prosodic constituent.
  Thus, there are no tones without a diacritic.
